  • Good Value

"I would say that this is a great deal for the money if you appreciate a remote location. It is near some very interesting natural sites. It would rate five stars from me if the squeaky doors were oiled. The homeowner provided good directions and a map."

  • Fantastic! An amazing way to experience Hawaii!

"The house is tucked away in a green paradise. There are star fruit, papaya, and coconut waiting to be harvested. The beautiful rocky beach is a short walk away down an enchanting jungle path. Watching my kids feed the geckos pineapple was more fun than I could have imagined. I loved it and hope to return someday!"

  • Nice cottage in a quiet location

"First let me say that our experience is clearly not the norm judging by the reviews submitted by previous guests. We were there at a time when the trade winds were nonexistent and right after a devastating hurricane had knocked out power for two weeks. We rented the cottage for a month but delayed our stay, due to the hurricane and uncertainty about when power would be restored, and came down thirteen days late even though it meant paying for another VRBO rental during that time. Diane did offer to refund a weeks rent but I declined since she, most certainly, could not have foreseen a hurricane. The cottage was neat and organized but not as clean as we would have expected. We found tiny ants were thick on the counter tops. My wife and I did a through cleaning in an attempt to rid the house of ants the first evening we were there but were never able to rid the cabinets of ants. The ant problem should be taken care of for the following tenants as Diane said it would be a priority for her caretaker. Being seniors in our seventies in not the best physical condition, we had planned spending a lot of time just relaxing in the cottage and, with a month to stay, only venturing out when the mood struck. However we found that the cottage was too hot to spend time there comfortably. There was seldom a breeze due to the lack of trade winds. The lanai was extremely hot during the day. The cottage did cool off at night and we never felt the need to run the AC unit in the bedroom. This cottage is for younger folks that want to spend their days on the beach, hiking or some of the many other activities available."

Kalapana Travel Tips

Enjoy a Beach Getaway in Kalapana Vacation Homes

Located in the Puna District on the Big Island of Hawaii, Kalapana vacation homes offer all the comforts of your home while you're away. Kalapana lodging includes a bevy of amenities, from wireless Internet service and large-screen TVs to covered lanais and gorgeous ocean views to soak in at the end of the day. The Kalani Oceanside Retreat is just a short walk from Kalapana lodging, and for a small fee guests can enjoy a 25-meter pool, hot tub and sauna, or they can opt for a relaxing massage or yoga class.

Family vacations are the perfect opportunity to spend time with your loved ones, bond as a family and escape the humdrum of everyday life. Whether you're traveling with your smaller immediate family or you're planning a large extended family gathering, vacation home rentals are ideal when traveling with families; they provide privacy that hotels can't offer and spacious floor plans. Hawaii has ample vacation homes, such as Kalapana vacation homes, to rent.

Enjoying Hawaii's Puna District

When you're not relaxing in Big Island vacation rentals, venture into the Puna District to explore nature and experience the eccentric charm of the area. Kalapana is Puna's most dramatic destination; in 1990, lava from the eruption of the Kilauea volcano engulfed the historic fishing village of Kalapana. Kalapana vacationers can hike to find a prime view of the Kilauea's Puu Oo vent, where the volcano most recently experienced activity.

Adventures on the Big Island of Hawaii

If you prefer to venture out of the Puna District for the day, the Big Island of Hawaii is the perfect place to experience adventure. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, for instance, spans 333,000 acres and features 150 miles of hiking trails that wind through rainforests, petroglyphs, volcanic craters and two active volcanoes, Maunaloa and Kilauea.
