  • Pretty sweet place

"This is a prime location, with fantastic sunrise views, access to good snorkeling (the water is warm!), a quiet neighborhood, lots of space, help close at hand, well-equiped kitchen, large deck, BBQ (it's big), and a yard big enough for a large wedding. The place is somewhat dated but is well-maintained and clean. It's off the beaten track - junk food and restaurants are a good ten minutes away - but Pahoa seemed close enough. Check out the Farmer's Market for good local and international cuisine."

  • Perfection

"Shangrila is an oasis of island beauty. Private lava vent heated lagoon with lots of fish to see while snorkeling - large koi and bright yellow and blue schools of small fish. Lots of room to relax, private and quiet location close to Pahoa where groceries etc are readily available. Check out the gourmet hot dog truck on the way - you won't be disappointed. Sunday is the outdoor market day on the road to Hilo, worth going. Champagne Pond is located here too. So much good to say - just go is my best advice!!! Brady is a wonderful caretaker who will make sure your needs are met while there, and Joe makes awesome potpourri. Can't remember the gardeners name (so sorry!) you did a great job - both routine and the emergency need that arose due to wild winds while there - exciting to say the least."

  • Ahhh...this is aloha...

"This area is my favorite on the Big Island, and this may just well be my favorite house! It's airy, open, and delightful, and the whole neighborhood is quiet and orderly. How about the house itself in particular? Well, if you're looking for relaxation, you've got it. The patio is south facing, but offers lovely shade in the mornings from the plantings on the east, and a bit in the late afternoon from the palms on the west. The bedrooms are roomy and breezy, very comfortable beds, and clean, modern, nice bathrooms, The windows, transoms and fans keep you comfortable day and night, the kitchen is well done, the laundry is new, the outdoor showers are handy, and it's well lit throughout. The Wai O'pae Tide pools are a ten minute walk down the block (there is little to no vehicular traffic, nor any beach), the night's stars are stunning (this is a Dark Skies area), and the place lends itself to conversation on the patio after dinner. The patio sits above the tide pool in the picture, and the yard is not done justice by the photos. It is, in a word or three, gorgeous, serene, lush, tropical. This NOT a tourist-y destination (that would be Kona...), this is a place for a slow, relaxed visit where you should feel at home, comfortable and bathed in the Island's Aloha. Close enough to Hilo, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, MacKenzie State Park, and Lava Tree to visit those whenever you want or need to, they're all easy drives. We ate several times in Pahoa at Pele's Kitchen- wonderful breakfasts! We were sharing the house with another couple, and had plenty of room for us all. We will be back as soon as we can, and that's the best recommendation I can give."

  • Snorkeller's Dream! Great spot to explore this less-developed side of the island!

"We absolutely loved waking up to such great views! You can enjoy the tidepools from just about everywhere in the house, but of course the best part is swimming in them! The house is nicely finished, decorated, and supplied with everything you could need from kitchen stuff to beach towels to coolers and more. The layout is a little quirky with the exterior stair, but hey this is a vacation home in Hawaii; lots of things in Hawaii are outdoors because they CAN BE! We enjoyed being a little bit off the beaten path in such a beautiful area of the island, but having great access to Volcano, Pahoa, and Hilo."
