"Rating Details: I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. I was more than happy with the location. The vacation rental was very clean. The property manager was adequately helpful. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The house is basic and charming, suited to the locale, unlike big, newer, out-of-place looking houses. Separate bedroom off the deck makes for very comfortable arrangement if you have 2 couples. Too bad about the coqui frogs; take earplugs if you're a light sleeper (for the whole area)."

  • I almost don't want to tell the world how marvelous this place is...

"I came to Hawai'i for a retreat so that I could write a book and easily snorkel during my breaks. This home was more than a place to stay; it was an astonishing sanctuary, a place where the sound of the ocean and the clarity of the air supported everything I was doing. My spouse and I loved the comfortable chairs looking out at the tidepools, and marveled at the fish swimming in the "front yard" lagoon. The space is laid out beautifully, with attention to detail that makes it harmonious. We've already booked for another stay here later this year. So grateful to the owners for creating this special place. In addition to how easy it was to get to great snorkeling, we enjoyed the proximity to Hilo, Pahoa, and Kapalana, our favorite places on the island when we're not writing or visiting the fish. The only thing not perfect is if you cannot climb stairs, which you must do to get into the house. Luckily, my knees are still good enough!"

"Yes, there was a neighbor who enjoyed swimming in the buff, but that's OK as we enjoyed doing the same. Though suits shouldn't come off until you are in the pool as the backyard doesn't have much privacy from any direction. Beds were not very comfortable as new mattresses are needed. Bugs are attracted to lights at night, so if you don't want them in your bedroom, turn on the bathroom light and that's where they'll go. Unfortunately, you can also expect a bathroom sink full of tiny flies upon waking in the morning. Kitchen cupboards are very large and do not have pulls, so they were quite awkward to use. And there are no shelves or dressers in the bedrooms for unpacking clothes, so you will likely live out of your luggage. Gatherings at night have to be in one of the two bedrooms as there is no great room or even a family room with a TV. That being said, the outdoor thermal pond is fabulous, the location is very, very quiet and we had a nice time. Get plenty of supplies before you arrive because it is a haul back to town. Beaches on this side of the island are mostly rock and not really swimmable, compared to Kona side. And the pace of living is a whole lot slower, but that's a nice change of pace, in my opinion. I would recommend this property, but be sure you know what you're getting into before you get there so there are no surprises."

  • A Little Piece of Heaven

"We are still thinking about the wonderful time we spent at this charming cottage in Hilo over Easter weekend. Spending the winters on Maui, we thought we had it all ..... until we stayed in this cottage. The cottage is very comfortable and is equipped with everything we needed, but the star of the show was outside the cottage, which is built right on the water's edge. The small tidal pool which the house is built over is fed by the ocean and is filled with sea life. We became friends with the inhabitants who spent their entire day in the tidal pool, except at very low tide It was like having our very own aquarium - and one that we could climb right in and swim with, some of whom were very friendly and were practically eating out of our hands. Beyond the small tidal pool attached to the property is a fabulous area for snorkeling and easily accessed from the property. A very popular destination for snorkelers, but they don't interfere with the peacefulness of the cottage and pools. Pretty shallow in many places, and with all varieties of sea life, these tidal pools really are a fabulous snorkeling spot for all age swimmers. We saw species we are still trying to identify. We loved the attractions nearby - all volcanic related and very interesting and within an easy driving distance. We chose to sleep outside on the futon on the deck and I think that is what I missed the most when I returned to my bedroom on Maui. To sleep under the stars, under a full moon, with the sounds of the ocean rocking you to sleep -that is heaven."
