"The four of us arrived late on a Monday. The house is exactly as it looks in the pictures. It's modern, clean and very nicely designed. The kitchen is excellent and has just about everything you need to cook just about anything (we love to cook.) The back balcony has a good grill (small but good.) The back yard leads out to jungle so you can grill in your BVDs if you like. Sure there is no AC but the celling fans work great and it's never that hot. The wifi worked great. The TV reception is OK but why are you watching TV?....you're in Hawaii? There is cell service but I never got more than 2 bars on my Verizon Iphone. More importantly, there is enough of a signal to use the navigation app. That noise you hear, is the ocean crashing on the lava about 1 1/2 blocks away. The next morning we walked to the tide pools where the snorkeling is just as good as everyone says. DO NOT forget swim socks. Trying to walk on the slippery lava in flipflops is tricky and ludicrous in bare feet. Once you get in the water, it's all worth it. The fins, masks and snorkels that they keep at the house are good enough for novice snorkelers like us but investing in a good mask and snorkel wouldn't be a bad thing. There are plenty of fins in all sizes so don't both to buy those. Now, there is some grocery shopping you can do in nearby Pahoa, but the two natural food stores don't quite suit carnivores like us. Luckily we stopped at the KTA Super Store on the way out of Hilo which is awesome. They have everything you could need, plus a good bakery, deli and meat department. Prepare for the higher prices, it's Hawaii. Restaurants in nearby Pahoa are ok. We bought some great marinated meats at the KTA and grilled. Breakfast was fruits and breads.....exactly what we wanted. Hilo is about a 30-40 minute drive through lush and amazing scenery. You have to go to the Ahaluanui Park, which is about 15 minutes away. It's a volcanically heated pool where waves crash over and into it. There is some marine life here, but this place is ideal for families with kids. The water is about 5-6 at it's deepest. We rented a 4x4 so we drove to Champagne Pond which made the extra cost of the 4x4 rental totally worth it. It's a bit too far to walk. Cat, the property manager is only two doors down and is very helpful. The owner contacted me after returned and is very very nice. I would definitely stay here again."

  • Ahhh...this is aloha...

"This area is my favorite on the Big Island, and this may just well be my favorite house! It's airy, open, and delightful, and the whole neighborhood is quiet and orderly. How about the house itself in particular? Well, if you're looking for relaxation, you've got it. The patio is south facing, but offers lovely shade in the mornings from the plantings on the east, and a bit in the late afternoon from the palms on the west. The bedrooms are roomy and breezy, very comfortable beds, and clean, modern, nice bathrooms, The windows, transoms and fans keep you comfortable day and night, the kitchen is well done, the laundry is new, the outdoor showers are handy, and it's well lit throughout. The Wai O'pae Tide pools are a ten minute walk down the block (there is little to no vehicular traffic, nor any beach), the night's stars are stunning (this is a Dark Skies area), and the place lends itself to conversation on the patio after dinner. The patio sits above the tide pool in the picture, and the yard is not done justice by the photos. It is, in a word or three, gorgeous, serene, lush, tropical. This NOT a tourist-y destination (that would be Kona...), this is a place for a slow, relaxed visit where you should feel at home, comfortable and bathed in the Island's Aloha. Close enough to Hilo, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, MacKenzie State Park, and Lava Tree to visit those whenever you want or need to, they're all easy drives. We ate several times in Pahoa at Pele's Kitchen- wonderful breakfasts! We were sharing the house with another couple, and had plenty of room for us all. We will be back as soon as we can, and that's the best recommendation I can give."

  • Paradise!!!

"My husband & I had a fantastic stay at Bay Front Bungalow. This gated community was so quiet & peaceful & offered the wonderful opportunity to "play in the water" right in your backyard. It's nice that the home owners provide kayaks & some snorkel gear. We snorkeled in the cove & also at Champagne Pond. The best snorkeling for us was at the tide pools just a short drive from the house. The rental was very clean & comfortable & the view was fantastic!!! Yes, construction is still happening next door, but it wasn't any big deal. Glad we chose this rental, as it worked so well for us."
