  • Faultless

"We stayed here for fourteen nights over the 2014/2015 new year period, and it was hard to go home. Kai Malolo is very well appointed that it's hard to understand how such a property can be available in this price range. The house can sleep six in three double bedrooms (I'm not completely sure what size the beds are, don't quote me on this), and has two bathrooms - one with two sinks - Europeans would be use to a bathroom with one sink, but I think in the US two vanity units counts as a full bathroom. Both also contain a shower, in addition there is a home office with printer and wired internet connection and a walk-in closet in another of the rooms. Laundry is kept in a separate room with a writing bureau; and the rest of the house is an open-plan format sharing the lounge and dining area with a kitchen separated through an island. A lanai runs along the rear length of the property allowing for viewing of the whales in the bay area but does not offer direct access to the garden/walk to the coastline. Additionally the garage for the property contains bikes, snorkelling gear and fishing equipment covering most of the activities you may like to do. The pool house has a variety of floats and inflatables for younger or less confident swimmers. The pool area is also completely fenced off so safe if you have little ones wandering around. Our stay was very relaxing. From the first day we were stunned at how quiet the area is - there is literally no noise. The little-used access road is so far from the house that traffic can barely be heard and the neighbours, those closeby, are very respectful with regards to noise (the exception being their dog Rags who does like to make sure the area is well guarded, but I was thankful to know we were at no risk of anything sneaking up on us! He is a very friendly and loveable great beast though). As for facilities inside, almost everything was catered for - there is a great entertainment system, plentiful towels and sheets, a fully stocked kitchen. We even had a running challenge to work out what we *didn't* have and the only thing we found we needed was a pizza wheel ;) The house was spotless, none of the usual insect problems you can have in Hawaii. We really struggled to come up with any downsides to this place: the pool was chilly, the access road is bumpy - neither of which are the owner's fault. Will definitely stay again! Note: property has stairs to the door and is not really suited to disabled access."

  • Excellant House, Location and Guidance

"We stayed at the Hibiscus House March 11-15, 2015 with my husband and two sons who are 6 and 8. The house was exactly what we were looking for. The recent renovations of the kitchen and flooring were beautifully done. There was tonnes of room for the four of us and loved the kitchen and living room along with the large wrap around deck. The tide pools down the block were amazing, our boys loved them and started out sticking close to us when snorkelling and soon were exploring on their own. Rebecca provided some great insight into things to do and see, we did as many as we could in 5 days but also took the time to relax. Bill was also an excellent host from down the road who provided us with some additional ideas and insight for our adventures. Every night our boys ended the day in the tide pool in the yard. They loved the warmth and chasing the fish and lobsters (type of crayfish I think but they thought they were lobsters who were missing their claws). The weather was cloudy all 5 days but was the same on other side of the island as well and never stopped us. Not having AC was never an issue, we left the big patio doors open during the day and the house was cool and comfortable. I loved the noises at night though one of my sons said he slept the first night with his eye open (??) but they never mentioned a thing again and they slept soundly each night. We had so much fun and would definitely stay again. There were two binders with suggestions for things to do and see, one was more up to date than the other and the older one must have been left outside or had a drink spilled on a few pages as they were hard to read. Would recommend updating the second binder as it was a great guide for us. Thank you for sharing your house with us."

  • A Little Piece of Heaven

"We are still thinking about the wonderful time we spent at this charming cottage in Hilo over Easter weekend. Spending the winters on Maui, we thought we had it all ..... until we stayed in this cottage. The cottage is very comfortable and is equipped with everything we needed, but the star of the show was outside the cottage, which is built right on the water's edge. The small tidal pool which the house is built over is fed by the ocean and is filled with sea life. We became friends with the inhabitants who spent their entire day in the tidal pool, except at very low tide It was like having our very own aquarium - and one that we could climb right in and swim with, some of whom were very friendly and were practically eating out of our hands. Beyond the small tidal pool attached to the property is a fabulous area for snorkeling and easily accessed from the property. A very popular destination for snorkelers, but they don't interfere with the peacefulness of the cottage and pools. Pretty shallow in many places, and with all varieties of sea life, these tidal pools really are a fabulous snorkeling spot for all age swimmers. We saw species we are still trying to identify. We loved the attractions nearby - all volcanic related and very interesting and within an easy driving distance. We chose to sleep outside on the futon on the deck and I think that is what I missed the most when I returned to my bedroom on Maui. To sleep under the stars, under a full moon, with the sounds of the ocean rocking you to sleep -that is heaven."
