  • Permanently on vacation

"This is a wonderful Japanese house, with a bonus – you don’t need to sit on the floor to eat, there are western dining tables. As others have noted this house needs updating and considerable maintenance, however, the roof was completed just before we arrived, so progress is being made. It would have 5 stars with the preceding attended to. And just a note, my wife wouldn't use the master BR bath as it had a pit tub/shower and there isn't adequate space."

  • Tiki Hut

"I plan to return again next year to this oasis in the Big Island. This house is conveniently situated close to Hilo. I am planning in coming back again next year for the Merrie Monarch. Thank you Alison for providing us with a great home away from home. Bozo"

  • Comfortable and affordable accommodation with friendly host

"We stayed at the Dolphin Hideaway for four nights. This studio is a good spot to base your exploration of the windward side of the Big Island due to its proximity to Volcano National Park, Mauna Kea, South Point, and Hilo. Laura was very friendly and non-intrusive. She thoughtfully provided us fresh eggs from her chickens and hiking guide booklets for Volcanoes National Park (VNP). The unit was new, very clean, and well-kept. The owner's pride of ownership is apparent. All amenities were provided except laundry detergent. As noted in the listing everything you need from beach towels to snorkel gear is provided. The firm bed's linens were fresh and clean but the bath towels a bit musty. The ceiling fan above the bed and is more than enough to keep you cool at night so no need for air-con. The kitchenette includes microwave, bar fridge, coffee maker, cutlery, and dishes. A barbecue is in the carport for cooking. Washer and dryer are also in the carport. Keep in mind: 1. This is a rural subdivision so expect a few bumps in the road and the odd falling branch. The last 0.3 miles to the house on 4th Ave is a well-graded gravel road. 2. The wi-fi was slow and has usage limits. Usually able to connect to the laptop but not the iPhone. We were reminded not to use it for streaming on our second day (hadn't done so) because it was almost used up. Laura was friendly with her request. 3. Bring laundry detergent if you are planning on using the washing machine. Overall the stay was good and the price appropriate. Don't forget to drop by the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory just down the highway before Hilo and the Hilo Coffee Mill on your way to VNP! Thank you Laura for being a great host!"

  • great little place!

"We wanted to stay on east side and found this great cottage to be perfect. Great location to get to all that the eastchas to offer, quiet and remote. Froggies abound as do mosquitoes but you get used to frog's noises and mosquitoes are quite manageable! The cottage was well equipped and very comfortable. Best sleeps! The property is large and fun to explore. The owners were thoughtful, responsive to any questions, and provided everything you might need. We really enjoyed our stay!!"
