  • A slice of Hawaiian paradise, Hidden gem.

"My husband and I stayed here for 21 days and it was Wonderful. There is no television But there is Wi-Fi. I enjoyed the soaker tub with shower. Loved the many fresh fruits and avocados, walking distance to the kehena beach and short drive to warm pools and tide pools as well as Pahoa village (Nings Thai food was great). Loved Makuu and Pahoa markets(kind of like a weekly flea markets) and uncle Roberts for local entertainment. A car is needed but I suggest checking to rent one from local instead of rental place. This is a Wonderful place to stay full of nature. Thank you Dave for your kindness, glad to have seen the newly hatched ducks."

  • Modern appointments, great location- what a steal

"We stayed here last week for spring break as part of an extended family trip and could not be more pleased. The house is well appointed with modern amenities. We aren't talking a beach house that has been aging for 15 years. The kitchen was modern (only lacking a dishwasher), and the house had a large main bathroom, a large upper suite and plenty of room for our 3 kids (age 3 - 8) plus six adults. Want wi-fi? Got it. Nice grill for cooking outside? Done. Plenty of patio space for lounging or napping during hammock time? Oh, you know it is there. Look, I love me some resorts where there are throngs of staff waiting on you hand and foot. But that comes with a huge price, especially in Hawaii. If you are searching VRBO you know what I am talking about. This place is about 40 minutes to an hour from Hilo International Airport, with a Wal-Mart and grocery stores on the way. With some simple planning, and shopping before you arrive, you are setup in a wonderful (small) neighborhood near some of the best snorkeling Hawaii has to offer. My 8 yr old daughter caught the snorkeling bug, and we had wonderful father/daughter bonding time every morning and evening as we dove together in calm waters. Pros: Modern house well appointed with snorkel gear, kitchen needs, electronics (tvs, dvd, wi-fi, etc) and lounging (lots of couches and a hammock to snooze on). Walking distance to amazing tide pools with breathtaking, novice snorkel opportunities. A bit off the beaten path. On the busiest day we saw maybe 20 people spread out over a large area. We could easily get off on our own. Lush rain forest terrain with fruit trees, tide pools and lots of wildlife. We saw birds, Mongoose, wild pig and more. Within a 20 minute drive of grocery and some restaurants. Only 40 mins to an hour to Hilo. Great owners. We had an electrical problem there (GFCI tripping periodically) and the owners did everything possible to fix the problem for us. It was easily worked around, but their attentiveness was ingratiating. Cons: No beach. This is where the lava flows, so think lunar landscape, not sandy white beaches. When you go snorkeling you are stumbling over sharp lava rock, so wear decent shoes and gloves. Even then, most of us had some scrapes. A bit secluded, so you'll want a car for times you just want restaurant food and it is hole-in-the-wall dining. Rainy side- not constant sun but every day there were hours of light sun for every hour of rain. Be flexible."

  • Best snorkeling on the island in the tide pools just around the corner!

"My 8yr old and I loved staying at this beautiful home. Home was stocked with everything we needed to include noodles, beach towels, boogie boards and even snorkel gear, barbecue, and large screened in lanai. Having laundry on site was a huge plus with plenty of detergent and fabric softener. We absolutely loved the outdoor showing that had plenty of hot water, privacy, and even all the necessary toiletries within the outside shower! Inside there was ample supply of bath products for personal hygiene and paper products. The lava rock pool was incredibly warm (slippery to get in and out of so wear good water shoes there and at the tide pools). Adult swim shoes on property but none for kids. Very relaxing! My son especially enjoy being able to play games on the computer in the house that even had paper available to print. Terry was super easy to book thru and contact. Many books and local tour books available. Secluded and a bit of a drive from the main cities so flying into and out of Hilo is best and don't recommend doing any morning activities in Kona or Kohala just because of the drive time but afyernoon tours on Kona side would be okay. Bought earplugs for the frogs based on previous reviews but didn't need them at all as they were not that loud. Highlight for my catching geckos around the property and even a baby cute! Mahalo Terry for such a fantastic place!!!!"
