"Third trip to HI, but first to Kauai. Found Lae Nani on VRBO and rented this lovely, ground-floor (I BR, 2 full BA) unit in building 3. Unit was renovated (not sure when, but based on the kitchen finishes and overall decor, not TOO long ago) and very well-kept. The kitchen was well-stocked with dishes, cooking appliances and utensils and nice touches such as basic spices, paper towels, a cooler bag, etc. Bathrooms had plenty of nice towels and even soap & shampoo. Bed was a lovely, comfy king. Large, ground-floor lanai opened onto beautifully landscaped grounds with direct ocean view. This unit was at the "far" (from the beach) end of building 3, but probably only 50 yards from the water's edge. Other property amenities such as close by, secure parking and a very nice pool area were much appreciated too. Only potential drawbacks (and these are minor)....while the entire property is well-maintained and this particular unit was fine, the 1970's era construction seemed to pay little attention to sound-proofing. Foot traffic from the unit directly overhead could be a bit annoying. And this particular unit is not air-conditioned (though there are ceiling fans in the living room and bedroom), though there may be a portable unit hiding in the corner of the dining area. This wasn't a problem in May, but Aug. / Sept. might be a bit unpleasant.
One note about Lae Nani's location. A trusted travel guide had recommended staying on the North shore of Kauai during summer, South shore in the winter. Lae Nani is on the east shore, so if you'll have a rental car and want to explore ALL sides of the island, its central location is nice. Nothing was more than 1.5 hours away from Lae Nani, and lots of restaurants and supermarkets were easily accessible nearby (some even in walking distance). Had we stayed on the North shore as recommended, we would have paid MUCH more, seen less of the island, and likely would have found the traffic and parking (or lack of) along the single north-shore highway very frustrating."
