  • Great house on the North Shore

"Beautiful house, fully equipped, great for our family! Easy access to the beach and all that is going in on Hanalei. Great place to get away from it all, but lots to explore nearby."

  • Pleasant but pricey, not great for older folks

"The Treehouse was spotless, airy and handsome (albeit a bit gloomy because of very dark-painted walls in every room), with high-end fixtures, a very well-equipped kitchen, roomy living and bedrooms and a great lanai with views of the neighborhood and the mountains. Although the beach is indeed two houses away as the crow flies, actual beach access is about a block and a half away. The beach is amazing -- clean, very swimmable and virtually empty of people except for a few visitors and locals walking their dogs. As a one-bedroom house, it seems very expensive, but I wanted to treat myself to a place almost on the beach. I was disappointed to find that, unlike virtually all of the dozen houses I've rented over the years on the island, the Treehouse was bereft of any books, maps or posters on Hawaiian history, culture, birds, fish, plants, beaches, botanical gardens, etc. The single guidebook was outdated, the free activities magazines were a year old, and the visitors' book lacked information on how to get to the beach (!). The owners' daughter assured me that the latter would be corrected, but said that guests repeatedly stole all the guides and other books, so they wouldn't be replaced. The other, very large rental house on the property, directly in front of the Treehouse, was vacant while I was there, which I appreciated as I can see that being at the Treehouse might be a very different experience if a big family or group were staying just a few yards away. And while the Treehouse would certainly be just fine for younger folks, as a 71-year-old I found it a bit worrisome: no landline and virtually no cell coverage (in case of an emergency), a very slippery shower, and a fair number of outside stairs whose individual steps were so dark that I couldn't see their edges. Falling down used to be funny, but now it's not!"

  • Killer Location

"Wow what a great location. Right on the sand with views of the ocean and night time Hanalei Bay to die for. The beach in front and around this house does not have many tourist at all so you are rewarded with a private, exclusive feel with a lot of privacy. Fantastic skin diving right in front. Really nice white sand beach just a few yards from the house. Really good restaurant next door is super convenient if you don't feel like cooking. Also a coffee shop right next door for the early risers that want to get up early and have coffee without disturbing the sleeping family. Really nice on this beach early in the morning! This North Shore location in my opinion is absolutely the best. Especially around sunset at Ke'e state park which is a 5 minute drive...Almost everyone leaves and you have fantastic sunsets almost all to yourself. Also lot's of other killer beaches close by. Tuesday's farmers market is a must which is right before you get into Hanalei about 15 minutes drive. The house is well appointed. Really nice big bathrooms. Owner/manager very easy to talk to and get info. I would definitely stay here again."

  • From Los Angeles

"Auntie's Cottage was absolutely perfect!!! We couldn't have picked a better place to stay in Kauai - it's incredible. It's charming and close to all the greatest spots. The cottage is not far from Tunnels beach, and just a short drive to the village where you'll find everything you need (shopping, restaurants and markets). Having this been our first time to Kauai, and not knowing what to expect, we were so happy that we chose Auntie's Cottage. It was exactly what it promised. It's private, (literally) across from the beach and cozy. We can't wait to come back and visit!"
