  • gorgeous hideaway

"We've been to Kauai several times, and we never stayed in the same place twice. This cottage, however, I would come back to. We loved everything about it: the bed with a view of nothing but green, the jungle concerts early in the morning, the peace and quiet away from the crowds (but still just a 5 minute drive to a nice beach), the thoughtfulness it was appointed with (from hairdryer, beach chairs and condiments to mosquito spray). I have to admit I was a little cautious at first about prepaying (which seems to be the norm for private accomodation in Kauai), but the owner's prompt answers to all my questions put me at ease. And everything worked out perfectly. There's only one thing we did not like during our 8 day stay: I guess it was mosquito season - and we got bitten up so bad that we hardly dared to sit on that gorgous little patio, even with mosquito coils smouldering."

  • Everything you need to relax in an intimate setting you'll treasure forever.

"We will never go elsewhere when we stay in Kauai. The property is beautifully maintained, large enough for privacy and dotted with fruit trees we picked from every morning as the sun rose. You will never have a fresher glass of grapefruit juice. The cottage itself was beautiful and clean, the kitchen had every utensil and gadget we needed to make our own meals. All the appliances you need for cooking and laundry are right there for you and work perfectly. Allan and Catherine are nearby if you have questions, but in no way intrusive. We were happy to receive a call from them one day in making sure we had everything we needed. Snowflake the cat sleeps outside the Sunset cottage and was a loving, sweet companion who was off doing her own thing during the day, and there to welcome us home from our adventures in the evening. The property is convenient to everything the North Shore has to offer, and it's so beautiful that there were several days we just stayed there, read, relaxed, enjoyed the sun and thanked our good fortune for finding such a lovely, intimate home away from home. Thank you Allan and Catherine for being such A-plus hosts. Mahalo!"

  • Awesome!!

"This was our second stay at Makale'a Palms! We enjoyed our first stay here in 2013 so much that we knew we had to stay here when we were coming back to Kauai!! This home is beautifully finished with a great kitchen, BBQ, loft bedroom and of course the awesome steam shower! We enjoyed soaking in the hot tub under the stars and palm trees. The outdoor shower was so great after a day at the beach too! We enjoyed cocktails and meals on the lanai daily. We loved that Makale'a Palms is so close to great beaches (Anini beach was our favorite) and my husband loved fly fishing for bone fish in the flats at Anini beach area! There are several fantastic farmers markets in this area where we bought incredible fresh fruits and vegetables. We bought fresh fish at the Hanalei fish market and enjoyed exploring all the sights in the area! We only have great recommendations for this awesome home and we are already talking about returning again soon !!! Mahalo, Doreen, for a fantastic stay!"

  • Quiet, clean, and off the beaten path

"My wife and I stayed at Hale Kokio for a week in early January. It was the perfect home base—central enough that we could explore the rest of the island when we wanted to, and comfortable enough that when we didn't feel like leaving, we could stay at home and nap, read on the lanai, or soak in the hot tub. The house was absolutely spotless, with a bowl of fresh fruit waiting for us on our arrival. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare all our meals, the bed was comfortable, and the little living room was perfect for evening reading, playing cards, and listening to music. During the day the house is bright and airy, and surprisingly cool despite the lack of air conditioning. At night, it becomes obvious how little light pollution there is on Kauai, especially out in the rural areas. The stargazing is spectacular. Arachnophobic renters should be aware that there are quite a few spiders around the property; it’s just part of being on the Garden Island. I suspect Rob and Lisa clean webs up on a regular basis. (They’re all over the gardens, but just a few on the lanai and the exterior of the house. There were none whatsoever inside the house.) Neither of two most common varieties—Chinese crab spiders and the large, handsome Hawaiian garden spiders—are toxic or harmful to humans in any way, but they are around. This is a fantastic rental. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay that feels remote but is still close to the attractions, this is the place for you. My wife and I have been to several of the islands, but after this last trip we decided that the next time we visit, there’s no reason to go anywhere other than Kauai. And when we’re on Kauai, we’ll stay at Hale Kokio."
