  • Breathtaking!

"This home, location, and views are stunning! Our 4th visit to Kauai. Sh'Zen had us saying Wow, from the moment we walked through the gate. The grounds are beautiful and private. The interior is spacious, clean and open. The kitchen had everything we needed. The master bedroom has views and a balcony that are simply gorgeous. How many places have an ocean view and golf view?! We enjoyed watching golfers reach the 7th green, which is in direct view from any of the back balconies of Sh'Zen. Watch the sun set from the balcony in the evenings. The outdoor shower was very handy to rinse off beach sand. We took the opportunity to use the pool a couple of times as well. Although beach gear is not supplied, previous renters had left several boogie boards. They were in excellent condition, so we made good use of them. The Captains cabin below, is accessed through a separate entrance. Wifi access is stronger here, than upstairs. There was plenty of soap, shampoo, lotions, clothes washing detergent, etc provided. Communication with the owner was very good. Highly recommend this property!!"

  • Annual Family Vacation

"We rented this beautiful two-level home for two weeks with our family and grand daughters age 7 and 10. This will be our 20th season in Hawaii and second on Kaui. Despite the threats of Hurricane Ana we arrived only to find Ana had veered away from the Island and we only "suffered" a couple of days of the warmest and most gentle rains we have even experienced. Jim's home was more than we had expected in terms of layout, cleanliness, quiet and peaceful neighbourhood and just amazing beauty everywhere. We enjoyed walking the neighbourhood in the morning and our grandchildren rejoiced in finding fruit on the ground which we consumed almost daily. We ate all our evening meals and breakfasts on the lanai with the beautiful view of Hanalei Bay. A real treat for our family was the swimming pool which we and the children enjoyed after the morning at the beach. We were overjoyed to find a beautiful piano in this house and our granddaughter practiced and played for us at least 2 hours a day. She had never seen such a beautiful piano. Everything was just perfect and our family agreed this is the best house we have ever rented and we will be back again every chance we get. If we had any recommendation at all, we would only suggest that you make sure the can openers and carving knives are not dulled. There were two in the house that wouldn't open any cans so we just went out and bought two more the next owners. Also I would bring a really good knife sharpener with me next time. It was wonderful to meet Jim and his wife and this alone will make it easier for us next time when we reserve, just knowing what nice people we are dealing with. Everyone agreed the beds were all comfortable and Jim went that extra mile to put a television in one of the spare rooms that didn't have one. This home is 5-star for privacy, the neighbourhood and luxury. The home is extremely well built and could certainly withstand any tropical storm or hurricane. Our other observation was that we would come again in summer when the seas are gentle for snorkelling and swimming. It is a lesson we learned on other islands too if you like to spend half your day in the ocean. We were all in need of some serious R & R and we received that in abundance at Jim's. Thank you Jim for a great time:)"

"We stocked up at Costco in Lihue, then were very pleased when we arrived at the house. You never really know till you get there. Our group consisted of four couples, one of whom had three young children. The downstairs master worked well for their family. The four and five year olds slept happily on the floor, and the one year old slept in the pack 'n play in the roomy walk-in-closet. Each of the other couples had a bedroom, although the second upstairs bedroom has a double bed and shares the master bathroom. The upstairs master bathroom has absolutely no doors, so there is no privacy, which may be important when you are sharing the bath with another couple. But it is a very nice bathroom and plenty roomy. The location was wonderful, backing up to a gorgeous golf course. Just know that the grounds people start very early in the morning. It seemed only the upstairs master bedroom couple heard them though. The kitchen has everything you could need for cooking, and the garage has lots of beach equipment from chairs and mats to bikes to snorkeling gear. They have coolers so you can take lunch with you. There is no A/C but the house is designed with louvered windows and doors for wonderful ventilation. It did take a day or two for our little one to adjust to the humidity. Be sure to drink lots of water. The only down side was the refrigerator. It did not cool down enough so we never had ice and had to put the milk in the freezer side for it to get cold. There was a working refrigerator in the garage, but that was not very convenient. We called the manager, and he responded quickly. He was aware of the problem, so we were surprised that nothing had been said about that. A note on the counter would have been nice as we could have put the milk and frozen items in the garage fridge that first evening had we known. The manager did bring us a bag of ice, but ice trays would have worked much better. But we made do, and he said the fridge would be repaired or replaced after we left. Hopefully, that has been done. Overall, it was a wonderful place to stay and very close to Hanalei Bay, which was perfect for the kids with gentle waves and a soft, sandy beach. We hiked down to Queens bath, which is very close, and the guys took the hike at the end of the road. We enjoyed a helicopter ride, the Smith Family Luau and lunch and the train ride at the Kilohana Plantation. We also took the river barge up the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto. We would rent this home again!"
