"My wife and I stayed at the Kala Beach cottage for a week to celebrate our 5th anniversary. The cottage is in a wonderful location on the west side of Kauai just steps from the beach! The decor and layout of the house is very beachy, homey and inviting. We felt at home right as we stepped through the door! It was fully stocked with anything we could have needed for a day at the beach, i.e. beach chairs, towels, snorkel equipment, umbrella. The town of Waimea is just a short drive down the road, and is a great little town with local restaurants, grocery stores, beach equipment rentals and, of course, shave ice! It's also the beginning point of the Waimea Canyon drive, which is a must-see! The cottage was a serene and relaxing home base for all the adventures we took on Kauai. We loved staying on the west side of the island because it felt a lot less "touristy" than the south-east and northern areas of Kauai. I highly recommend the cottage for a romantic getaway or even a family vacation. Kauai is the most beautiful and peaceful place we've ever been (and we've travelled all over the world), and the cottage was one major contributor to our incredible vacation!"Guest: Josh C. "We stayed in the Hibiscus unit, which is one of 3 on this property. It has 2 bedrooms and a small bathroom on the lower floor, and a good sized kitchen/living room/balcony area on the second floor. You need to be able to climb one flight of stairs. The unit is clean, well kept, and nicely furnished. The photo on the vrbo ad is of another unit and looks like it is taken from the HIbiscus unit balcony, but the Hibiscus building looks similar. The property itself is located in a residential neighborhood in Kekaha, a sleepy old plantation town in west Kauai. The nearest "larger" town is a few miles away in Waimea, and there are some markets and restaurants there (although most of the restaurants are closed for dinner.) This is not a place to go if you want a tourist town full of restaurants, bars, and souvenir and t shirt shops. It's good if you want to stay in a local town and cook your own dinners. We stayed here because we like to hike, and the access to Kokee and Waimea Canyon State Parks is excellent. We did some great hikes there, and also did a day boat tour of the Na Pali coast with LIko tours, and this worked our well and was very scenic and enjoyable. The bed was comfortable and the kitchen fine. I would have given it 5 stars except for 3 things: 1) between the property and the ocean there is a road. It is quiet all night, but in the early morning there is some noise of cars rushing by as locals head to work; 2) there is no air conditioning and the unit gets quite hot when you lock it up, leave all day, and then return. It then takes a while to cool off after opening all exterior ventilation and turning on the fans; 3) lots of wild rooster noise (wild rooster noise is a problem all over Kauai, but is more here than in more touristy developments where the management seems to keep them under better control.) I live on Maui where there are also some wild chickens (not as bad as Kauai) so I can ignore these, but they may bother you. If you are bothered by noise you may want to use ear plugs in the early mornings due to the cars and roosters. That being said, the value for your money is excellent, and I would recommend it and would definitely stay here again."Guest: steve Date of Stay: July 2013 Review Submitted: July 20, 2013View listing
"If you're like me, you have experienced disappointment upon arriving at the rental or resort of a well-planned vacation - that will NOT happen to you with this house! As soon as you open the door of Shaka Hale, you feel as though you are being welcomed into the lovely home of a friend. It is beautifully decorated; elegant, yet comfortable. Nothing has been overlooked to ensure that your stay is anything but enjoyable: fully equipped kitchen, outdoor grill, plenty of linens (including beach towels), quality mattresses/bed linens, washer/dryer and 2nd refrigerator in the garage - we even discovered multiple beach chairs, umbrellas, snorkeling sets and boogie boards. A pleasant surprise! My family of 4 (including 2 teenage boys over 6') was joined by 4 other adult family members - and we never felt crowded. The 2 separate living areas and multiple lanais provided personal space for those who wanted to relax or read, yet the roomy, open floor plan downstairs allowed us to gather for meals and plan our next day of adventure! A road separates the house from the ocean, but the landscaping you see in the picture provides a buffer - as well as a path to the long, sandy beach that awaits your morning walks :). We never had rain on this sunny side of the island during our stay, though you probably will get wet if you visit the East or North shores. This house is conveniently located to Waimea Canyon, and it's an easy drive to the beaches and restaurants in Poipu, Spouting Horn and the Allerton Gardens. We actually appreciated being able to return to our quiet "neighborhood" after a full day of sightseeing or adventure and enjoy a glass of wine on one of the lanais, watching the sun set over the ocean :). Must-dos: snorkeling at one of the many beaches in Poipu, Waimea Canyon, Napali Coast boat tour, North Shore (how many shades of green are there?!), shave ice at Hee Fat in Kapa'a, Allerton Gardens (bring bug spray!), air tour, sunset dinner at The Beach House. Last, but not least, Chad (rental agent) is amazing to work with! From my first inquiry he was very responsive, generous with his time, and went out of his way to be informative and helpful - ensuring that our stay would be memorable. He even facilitated having a "happy first anniversary" sign I made being hung in the house to greet my niece before our arrival! Our experience was that we weren't just another "transaction" to him. Shaka Hale - and Kauai - awaits you . . . :)"Guest: Laurie K. Date of Stay: June 2014 Review Submitted: July 8, 2014View listing
