"Adorable little "shack" tastefully decorated with Hawaiian memorabilia and a dash of European flair. Everything was as advertised.
We loved the patio (where we had our breakfast every morning) and outdoor shower (great for rinsing off any sand) in the backyard. A hammock would have been a great bonus.
The gaz stove was a nice surprise. The kitchen was adequately equipped, although a large chopping knife and a cutting board would have been useful. There is no microwave, which was fine with us, but which some people might find handy. There were a few condiments available/left from previous guests, such as salt, pepper, garlic powder, chili powder. A small drip coffee machine and filters were available. There is also a BBQ, though we did not use it.
The room did get quite warm in the day, but the evenings were fine with the ceiling fan on, and there was no problem falling asleep. The shack is located in a nice and quiet little neighbourhood near Paia, so centrally located to reach all of Maui's popular destinations.
Note that there is no television, which we did not care for, but other guests may.
Bathroom has a standup shower with good water pressure. No soap or shampoo was provided, but there were a few toileteries left from other guests such as baby shampoo, shaving cream and body lotion. There is no hair dryer.
No washer/dryer in the room. A clothing rack to dry stuff would be nice. (though we made do by using the patio furniture).
As Hawaii is a tropical climate, expect to be visited by cute little lizards every so often! :)
Our hosts were fantastic, very friendly, providing us recommendations for restaurants and kite surfing spots, even lending us some gear.
My only "complaint" is that it was a bit pricey, but I would still highly recommend the Surf Shack."

"We rented this place with 3 adults and 3 kids. It was a truly amazing experience. Paula could not have been more helpful in the whole process. We had a quite chaotic departure since our van was not starting when we tried to leave for the airport...and she even mailed me all the stuff we forgot:-)
The little beach opposite the house is great for little kids and the store at the end of the street has divine food. Paia is a few minutes drive and baby beach is about a 10 min drive. Perfect location, great house, best hosts..we will be back for sure...."

"If you want to get a sense of living in Maui, then renting a condo like this one is a way to go.
It is very affordable and well equipped. We didn't feel like we were missing anything. Yes, it tends to get noisy with the traffic but honestly , it didn't bother me at all as I could also hear birds in the morning and crickets at night.
The condo is literally few minutes away from the beach ! At night we could hear waves crashing on the shore.
The condo is very close to all the shops that are located in Paia which is 3 min drive and only 8 min drive to my favorite beach 'Baldwin Park'
Overall we had a great time :)
Thank you Paula

"This was our second time in Maui. Our first trip there, we stayed in a resort in Wailea, thinking that - considering the price - it would be as charming as what we had imagined. This second time around, we were in desperate need of some authenticity, and this cottage was everything we hoped for! Our stay at the Maui by the Sea cottage was perfection! The cottage – which is simplistically decorated – had everything you need to prepare your own meals, which allowed us to live like locals and experience the real Paia. The property is right next to the sea and is a spot loved by sea turtles. We didn't have to go snorkeling to see them, all we had to do is eat breakfast and count them! But what we truly appreciated during our stay was our amazing hosts. Their kindness and generosity are unprecedented. Valérie had concocted us a list of great tips and places to see while in Maui, and left on a few occasions local fruit baskets on our door step for us to enjoy! We are glad we got to meet such a lovely couple.
We would strongly recommend this place!"
