  • Super friendly owner and very pleasant stay - Thanks Mike!!!

"Spent over three weeks at Nessie's Place and really enjoyed my stay. This house is definitely a bargain for the area, which explains the four-star rating (a higher price who lead to a two to three-star rating from me). As previous reviewers mentioned, the best thing about this place is its owner, Mike or Loch, not sure about his real name, but I called him Mike throughout our stay and he didn't complain, so here I'll call him Mike. Mike is an amazingly helpful and easy-going guy, very generous too: he gave us an avocado, oranges and even mixed greens grown by a friend of his. Plus, he is really hard working and keeps his backyard beautiful. There is a kalamansi tree in the back (like a small orangy lime - great in cocktails!) and, while we were there, there was lots of kale, mizuna and aragula that Mike himself had grown and that we could pick anytime we wished. Second best thing about the house is its location: a scenic one-mile walk uphill from the ocean and the heart of Paia village, along a well-maintained sidewalk that makes walking safe (make sure you have a flashlight with you at night though). The house itself is quite spacious and has two full bathrooms and three bedrooms. The place was pretty clean when we got there (except for the freezer that was obviously missed by the cleaners - had to clean that ourselves) and the beds were comfortable, although one of the beds is actually a foam pad on a futon base (but still quite comfortable with a comforter over it, under the fitted sheet). We found that the futon in the living room was not comfortable at all to sit on though. There is an ancient TV in the living room, the remote did not work for it, we just watched it once and had to change the channels and operate the volume directly on the TV - no big deal. A recent reviewer pointed out that the barbecue was too old - well I'm happy to report that Mike bought a brand new barbecue during our stay and it worked flawlessly for us. Also, there is a washer and dryer outside and they were both working great and came in very handy. All in all, a great stay! The only suggestions I would have for improvement would be: - A reliable timer for the hot water tank - we ended coming back from the beach to a cold shower on several occasions, and even though Mike asked us to let him know when there was no hot water, by the time you're out of the shower to let him know, you've already had your (cold) shower; and - Hooks and towel bars in the bathrooms."

  • Great beach home property

"Gregg, was very accommodating in our rental of this beautiful ocean front property. He had a late check out the day we arrived but arranged cleaning and a quicker turn around time for the property so that we could stay in it that night. We were also grateful for the cooler he lent us during our stay. We enjoyed waking up and going to sleep to the sounds of the ocean. We enjoyed the kayaks and long boards. The kids Played many hours in the sand and on the large grass area between the home and beach. We enjoyed exploring up and down the beach and was thrilled to come across a turtle sunbathing. The walkout basement was perfect for our parents who were with us. We loved being able to have many dinners and breakfasts on the lanai looking over the ocean."

  • Incredible location, amazing hosts

"We are just finishing up 2 glorious weeks over the winter holidays at Ray & Vivienne's place on the North Shore of Maui and couldn't be happier with the location, setting and accommodations. We started every day with coffee on the ocean view deck followed by a game of family boccie (we have 2 teen/tween sons) in the sprawling front lawn and then headed out for island adventures or just walked over to the beach to SUP, kayak, beach walk or just relax (we didn't get the weather for wind sports but fortunately that wasn't our objective this trip). The owners were incredibly accommodating and full of local knowledge and even invited us to their New Year's Eve party, and very generously allowed me to use their covered area for a small birthday gathering with local friends. The neighbors were all welcoming and friendly and we felt extremely fortunate to be able to stay here. We'll definitely be back."

  • Exactly what we were looking for!

"This was our second time in Maui. Our first trip there, we stayed in a resort in Wailea, thinking that - considering the price - it would be as charming as what we had imagined. This second time around, we were in desperate need of some authenticity, and this cottage was everything we hoped for! Our stay at the Maui by the Sea cottage was perfection! The cottage – which is simplistically decorated – had everything you need to prepare your own meals, which allowed us to live like locals and experience the real Paia. The property is right next to the sea and is a spot loved by sea turtles. We didn't have to go snorkeling to see them, all we had to do is eat breakfast and count them! But what we truly appreciated during our stay was our amazing hosts. Their kindness and generosity are unprecedented. Valérie had concocted us a list of great tips and places to see while in Maui, and left on a few occasions local fruit baskets on our door step for us to enjoy! We are glad we got to meet such a lovely couple. We would strongly recommend this place!"
