Great little cottage in the upcountry
"My wife, 5-year old daughter and I stayed at the Tropical retreat for 5 nights. We had a very enjoyable stay at the Tropical Retreat cottage. The cottage is very spacious, as other reviewers have noted and has a well-equipped kitchen including a dishwasher and fridge - I actually can't say enough about the fridge - it has a crushed ice setting which is perfect for making an extra cold glass of water, which is perfect for Hawaii's hot summer days. I think our daughter is now addicted to water it tastes so good! :)
The cottage is really well situated for Maui adventures. You are only 1 mile away from the start of the "Road to Hana", very close to Baldwin beach/baby beach, and also to forest walks and the Haleakala Crater.
Being in the upcountry, the area also feels more 'real'. We later stayed in West Maui, and visited South Maui, both of which feel like one big strip mall by comparison.
Everything went great during our stay and the only negative is that you don't have much of a view of the ocean (the volcano is behind you but is usually covered by clouds by the afternoon). That said, you do have a comfortable patio where you can lounge in privacy with a cold glass of wine so we didn't mind too much.
One caution: the closest 'big' grocery stores are about 20+ minutes away so stock up before you arrive!
I really recommend this place!"

"There are hardly enough words to say how simply beautiful this home and our time in Hana was. This area is the Hawaii of my dreams full of tropical plants, fruits, waterfalls, and picturesque ocean views. The owners of the guest houses of Malanai have thought of every detail to make your stay elegant and comfortable. We had an amazing time in Hana! Just be prepared going in, there are no airconditioners used in Hana. The homes have many windows which easily capture the gentle breezes and trade winds blowing in from the ocean."

"The location of the house is great, with a view of the bay and the lullaby of waves against the rocks just below the living room. In general the place is in good shape, although some minor details need attention --something understandable given the continual corrosion of houses near the sea. The owners were very helpful and kind. Good choice if you seek a seaside experience."

"Adorable little "shack" tastefully decorated with Hawaiian memorabilia and a dash of European flair. Everything was as advertised.
We loved the patio (where we had our breakfast every morning) and outdoor shower (great for rinsing off any sand) in the backyard. A hammock would have been a great bonus.
The gaz stove was a nice surprise. The kitchen was adequately equipped, although a large chopping knife and a cutting board would have been useful. There is no microwave, which was fine with us, but which some people might find handy. There were a few condiments available/left from previous guests, such as salt, pepper, garlic powder, chili powder. A small drip coffee machine and filters were available. There is also a BBQ, though we did not use it.
The room did get quite warm in the day, but the evenings were fine with the ceiling fan on, and there was no problem falling asleep. The shack is located in a nice and quiet little neighbourhood near Paia, so centrally located to reach all of Maui's popular destinations.
Note that there is no television, which we did not care for, but other guests may.
Bathroom has a standup shower with good water pressure. No soap or shampoo was provided, but there were a few toileteries left from other guests such as baby shampoo, shaving cream and body lotion. There is no hair dryer.
No washer/dryer in the room. A clothing rack to dry stuff would be nice. (though we made do by using the patio furniture).
As Hawaii is a tropical climate, expect to be visited by cute little lizards every so often! :)
Our hosts were fantastic, very friendly, providing us recommendations for restaurants and kite surfing spots, even lending us some gear.
My only "complaint" is that it was a bit pricey, but I would still highly recommend the Surf Shack."
