  • Our perfect holiday

"Every morning we watched the sun rise over the Mokulua islands off Lanikai - an incomparably beautiful sight. There's nowhere in the world I'd rather be than here at Lanikai, and this is the perfect house for it. If you're looking for granite countertops and the latest Bose speakers, this is not the place for you. But if you want a wonderful 1920s, completely kitted out old-style beach house, don't hesitate for a minute. We loved every minute here. There's no beach in front and getting to the water involves either walking a house away and down the access path or clambering over rocks, but because there's no beach in front of the house, there's almost total privacy and you can get your paddle board into the water and set off for the islands or start snorkelling among schools of fish (and even a sea turtle and seal or two). The garden in the front of the house is beautifully kept and has a view of the mountains, which you also see from the dining room table (from the dining and living rooms you actually see both the sea and the mountains). Great for barbecues and outdoor dining. And lovely little old- fashioned bedrooms with built-in cupboards, each bedroom with a view of the sea. What more could you want? If we could, we'd return every year."

  • Highly recommended

"Our week at the Lanikai bungalow with its feel of a laid-back treehouse was the perfect setting for a second honeymoon. A relaxed, homey respite that was perfect for our needs. Though the weather was hot and humid, the ceiling fans and two lanais provided cool breezes. One night we had a huge thunderstorm that was kind of exciting! Lynn and her son who live in the main house were wonderful hosts, completely unobtrusive but very helpful when we needed them. We walked to the fabulous Lanikai beaches, climbed the Pillbox Hiking Trail and had a couple of easy day trips to Honolulu for the ukelele festival and the newest Pearl Harbor exhibits. The only thing we regret is not kayaking out to the Mokulua Islands. Next time..."

  • Comfort of home - turned our "trip" into a "Vacation"

"I recently had the opportunity to extend a business trip and invite my small family along with me. This was our third and final location of the trip, and turned our trip into a vacation. We first stayed at a hotel in Waikiki (due to business needs), then an Air BNB location in Kaneohe Bay area (great view - but that was all). Landing at the Surf Hale, and having the guidance of Carly and Jeff was just what we needed. Connecting with Carly was easy and timely. Working with her either by text or e-mail we sorted the whole thing out, and got payment arranged via PayPal which was convenient also. The photos and description are accurate, the only difference is that some of the furniture was moved around. All in all it was very convenient and comfortable. There were three of us (myself, my wife, and 7 year old son) and it fit well. The kitchen wasn't huge, but right sized to let us create small meals easily. The walk to the beach was 5 minutes at most to Kailua Beach Park (seems like local hang out, with decent waves for the little grommets), and maybe another 3-5 minutes if you want to head to Lanikai Beach (highly recommended for snorkeling and floating... and just sun soaking). We were a short 5 minute drive from downtown Kailua. We also discovered that her comment about local "wildlife" was accurate as well. We spotted any number of lizards and geckos (my son was pretty excited about that), and had a regular cardinal come and sing to us on the patio in the morning. We should have paid more attention to the comment, and not left our bananas out through the night. It seems that local mice appreciate bananas and one helped himself to about half of a banana. We didn't see him or have anything else nibbled on for the remainder of the trip, so I guess he got his fill. We didn't use the kitchen too much, because Carly and Jeff guided us to a few good spots for food. The first was Kalapawai Cafe. You could get small meals, easy stuff for kids (including PB&J), or something more exotic and island focused (like striped marlin over lemongrass risotto). We also tried out Cactus, a (light?) Mexican restaurant that had island flavor. Not sure exactly how I'd classify it, but when we return to the area we'll go there again. Last we went to Kailua General Store for light fluffy shave ice. If we find ourselves back on Oahu we'll definitely seek out Carly and Jeff to see if the Surf Hale is available. Great spot to relax and enjoy."

  • Cozy cottage steps away from the beach

"The cottage was a perfect place for 6 of us - 2 adults with four young children. The kitchen was easy to use, bedrooms air-conditioned with lots of books and toys for our elementary school children. There were plenty of beach toys too - body boards, floats, rugby balls and many more. The back yard was a great place to dry our swim suits, shower off the sand or just hang out in the sun or under the coconut tree. Lanikai beach was just steps away and was perfect for our family vacation. I will recommend this property for anyone who is looking for a relaxing time off with family or friends."
