Recent North Shore Oahu reviews

  • Great Location

"Our family just spent the July 4th week at this condo rental. Overall, the condo was a huge part of the fantastic vacation that we had on Oahu's North Shore. The pictures listed for the unit is very accurate. The condo was well furnished and very clean. We had 5 people (3 adults / 2 children) in our party and there was plenty of room for everyone, including 2 bathrooms. We had a car rental during our stay. The other reviews stated that you can stay within the Turtle Bay Resort area (beach, condo pool, restaurants), which is true. I will say that the car rental allowed us to check out the many other beaches, towns, and restaurants that make up the North Shore. The condo is in a convenient location to check out the sights outside of Turtle Bay Resort. I would highly recommend this condo rental for a family vacation."

  • Peace and quiet at Hawaii House!

"This was a birthday trip to celebrate my Mother's 94 birthday. There were 4 adults in our group, ranging in age from 50-ish to 94. The Hawaii House was perfect for us! Each had their own room which provided privacy and yet the open floor plan of the house kept everyone involved. The fact that it was all one level, with no steps into the house, plus the walk-in shower in the second bathroom, made it very accessible for someone requiring a walker for ambulation. The backyard was so nice and level without obstruction which made it perfect for maneuvering with a walker. Everything was clean and neat. Nice big bath towels and lots of beach towels. Really appreciated the retractable close-line in the covered lanai for hanging wet suits, and the grill was put to good use. Being from the humid South, I was skeptical about the air conditioning only being in the bedrooms; thought for sure we'd die of the heat in August. But I was made a believer! Just open the sliding glass doors and the windows and the most perfect ocean breeze kept us perfectly comfortable! Even on the hottest of days. I'm a believer now! The view was superb!!!! Nothing can beat waking up to the palm trees and beautiful ocean view, then stepping outside to lounge in a chair with your morning coffee! Emails with the owner were prompt and very helpful. The directions to the house were spot-on, and it was a great location/home base for all our sight-seeing. I read all of the reviews prior to booking this home and want to say that if you require extremely high-end appointed accommodations, this is not the intent of Hawaii House. It IS a cozy, homey, comfortable "cottage by the sea" for those looking for a more laid-back style. The only clarification I would offer is that due to time/weather/ etc. (all things OUT of the owner's control) there is no beach, only rocks. Did not feel comfortable venturing into the ocean form the backyard steps due to this, but there are many wonderful beaches within just a few miles. And even with out a beach, having the ocean in your backyard with all its beauty was wonderful! Would definitely stay here again. Mahalo Gary!"

  • Loved this perfect place for us

"We were three: grandma, mom and five year old and Lindsay and Chris' home was so wonderful. It is the right size for us, really comfy and pretty, and right by the beach where we spent most of our time. We cooked there and the kitchen was very accommodatingly set up. The property affords you lots of privacy too and is quiet and so pretty. In the morning we walked to Ted's Bakery for breakie and ate it on the beach on the way home. My daughter surfed at nearby Turtle Bay while I hung out at the pool there with my five year old granddaughter and listened to sweet live Hawaiian music and had a Mai Tai. We will return as soon as we can. It's a real gem of a place. Very nicely decorated, too."

  • Perfect Beach House

"My husband and I spent 2 weeks here, with our families coming all the way from Europe. Kerry (the owner) and Billy (manager) were really pleasant and easy to work with. The house is a perfect beach home, in the most beautiful part of the island. We've been in Hawaii before, but only stayed in hotels and this house was a real treat for us - having everything that you need (just like home) and a perfect beach, right in the front of the house. Breakfast in the morning and dinner at the sunset, sipping coffee on the porch, right next to the ocean - what else you can ask for. The beds were really comfortable. We had enough towels; there were some amazing books in the drawers, TV that we didn't turn on once (no need), AC available in each room, coffee machine, even a slow cooker (wow), washer, dryer, a lot of board games, toys for kids etc. Once again, I want to thank Kerry for having us, and we will definitely come back. Mahalo!"

North Shore Oahu Travel Tips

Oahu's North Shore has been attracting visitors for years due to its beautiful beaches and panoramic views. The area that makes up the North Shore is between Ka'ena Point and Kahuku Point and is located 28 miles from Waikiki.

The weather in Oahu is warm so be sure to pack your summer clothes no matter what season you're visiting. Since it'll be cool in the evenings, you may want to consider bringing along a sweater or light jacket. The average temperature in Oahu is between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit when the summer air is warmer and drier. Although it cools down between December and March, the trade winds keep the temperatures comfortable throughout the year.

North Shore Attractions

The area is best known for its massive waves and surfers from all over the world flock there to test them out. If you want to find the best surfing spots on the North Shore, be sure to visit Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach. However, the most notable surfing spot is Ehukai Beach, also known as Banzai Pipeline. Annual surfing competitions are held at the North Shore including the Reef Hawaiian Pro, the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing and the Billabong Pipeline Masters. These three competitions make up the Triple Crown of Surfing. Even if you've never been surfing, there are several surf schools on the North Shore that can help you get acquainted with a long board.

If you visit Oahu's North Shore during the summer months, you can expect to see calm waters that are perfect for snorkeling, diving and swimming. The water is crystal clear and the beaches are among the most beautiful in the world, so spending a lot of time here during your trip is a must.

You'll want to check out Waimea Valley where there's a world class botanical garden at Waimea Falls. You can also visit ancient Hawaiian cultural sites and learn more about the islands. Waimea Valley offers a North Shore Eco Tour and the Hawaiian Hiking Company will take you off the beaten path on a privately guided hike through the Hawaiian rainforest. If you want to get a bird's eye view of the North Shore, take skydiving and glider rides at Dillingham Airfield.

Keana Point State Recreation Area features rare native plants and the opportunity to spot sunbathing seals. Although there is no shade or fresh water, the point is still a sight to see as there are picturesque views and the chance to see humpback whales spouting and breaching from November through March. Bringing along a camera to Keana Point State Recreation Area is a must due to the incredible views and wildlife.

Things to Do in North Shore

Haleiwa: Shopping and dining are just some of the many things you can enjoy in the town of Haleiwa. Women's clothing stores include Silver Moon Emporium, Island X Hawaii, Patagonia and Growing Keiki. There are also a number of surf shops including North Shore Boardriders Club, Tropical Rush and Strong Current where you can pick up your gear as you get ready for surfing lessons. If you want to grab a bite to eat in Haleiwa, be sure to stop by Opal Thai. This food truck is one of the best in town and offers a unique dining experience. You'll find what some may argue is the best shrimp on Oahu at Macky's Kahuku Sweet Shrimp Truck. Don't fight off the urge to sink your teeth into a delicious cupcake. Waialua Bakery offers delectable desserts as well as healthy sandwiches.

Mokuleia Beach Park: While in the North Shore, don't forget to check out Mokuleia Beach Park, the filming location for the popular television show "Lost." The park is located on a remote part of the island's northwest point and is 10 miles from the nearest store. This isolated area looks like a deserted island, and is surrounded by turquoise water and powder white sand. Expect to encounter sea turtles and other marine life. You can spend a whole day without seeing another individual at this picture-perfect secret find.

Puu O'Mahuka Heiau: This viewpoint and religious site offers panoramic views from a bluff located high over Waimea Bay. Puu O'Mahuka Heiau is on the National Register of Historic Places and was once the site of human sacrifices. The land of Puu O'Mahuka Heiau covers 2 acres and historians believe it may have been constructed as early as the 1600s. Today, there is a path that leads you to Heiau and the stone walls that outline it.
