  • Beautiful Location and Amenities

"Our family enjoyed Eagle's Nest this weekend as we held our 28th annual family gathering. It's a gorgeous facility with plenty of amenities for family gatherings, business gatherings, or a relaxing weekend away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. We really enjoyed the beautiful setting but wished we had more time to spend taking in all the events Galena has to offer as well as the special provisions at Eagle's Nest. The pre-arrangements were well communicated and everything was as stated in the rental offering. Taking advantage of the weekend, we had 24 people enjoy family members ranging in age from <1 year old to our family matriarch who'd rather not allow me to state her age. We enjoyed the recreational provisions, the setting, nature walks, and time away in the Galena area. Hopefully our family will be able to enjoy Eagle's Nest in the future."

  • Nice location

"Their were a lot of pluses included in this spacious home. If you are looking for a private place for a group of twelve or more this is the place to go. Six bedrooms with private bath. Nice dining area with kitchen. No crockpot and oven was not clean otherwise you should have what you need. Beds were very comfortable and if you need more towels you had use of washer and dryer. I recommend the owners supply pump soap in kitchen for guest.Bar soap while preparing meals not very sanitary. We had planned to go into Galena for dinner out but we enjoyed the property and the lovely dining/kitchen area so much we decided to stay and use the grill and outdoor kitchen area."

  • The Perfect Weekend

"Arrived to find the house clean and well cared for. Ample sleeping areas in the lower level. The upstairs is absolutely perfect for family and/or friends gatherings. Loved the breathtaking views from the deck. The open concept in the upper level was perfect for cooking, dining and having fun as a group. Beautiful stone fireplace in the Living Room. We will definitely be back."

  • Great retreat for family

"We had such a wonderful time at your house. You have added some additional improvements since we first looked at the house and it really helped with the sleeping arrangements. The King size bed on the first floor is great. The master is great with Two queens since we had little ones that like to still sleep near. Very, clean, nicely decorated for Christmas, tree and all. Plenty of room to stretch out and relax. Thanks for making our family weekend so special. We will come again soon."

Galena Travel Tips

Galena Vacation Rentals for Great Vacations Year-Round

Galena, in Jo Daviess County, Illinois is a well known tourist destination for its rich history, great golf and superb skiing. The region’s weather is part of its attraction, with hot summers and thick snow in winter. Galena vacation rentals are conveniently located on US Highway 20, off Interstate 39. It is just a three-hour drive from Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

Galena Cottages in a Region Steeped in History

This region is steeped in history and 85 percent of the homes here are on the National Historic Register. In the town itself, visitors can wander down Main Street with its antique stores, art galleries, and selection of boutique shops. In the evenings, the town offers a wide variety of pubs and restaurants. Surrounding Galena is quiet countryside and peaceful waterways.

Visitors come for its tranquility as well as its history. Close to Galena cottages are a variety of historic sites to discover. At Casper Bluff, visitors may want to visit the Indian Burial Mounds to learn more about the traditions and life of Native Americans. There is a satellite resource of the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design. Here, visitors can enjoy the contemporary art, images and architecture from across the world. The oldest home in Galena dates from 1826 and is now a treasure trove of old photographs and memorabilia from the early days of the town. On Third Street in Galena, visitors will find Congressman Washburne’s House. The house was constructed in 1843 and home to Elihu Washburne, congressman and advisor to Abraham Lincoln. The Galena History Museum hosts a variety of exhibits such as the lives of Ulysses Grant and Abraham Lincoln, the geology of the region, and even the history of footwear!

A recent addition to the town’s attractions is the Old Blacksmiths Shop, tracing the history of blacksmithing over 100 years. It is still a working shop and lucky visitors will be able to watch the blacksmiths at work. Stop by the Old Market House which was the original focal point for the surrounding communities in the 1800s. On Cobblestone Street is the site of the Old Stockade. This 1832-building was built in preparation for an attack by local Indians. Originally a safe haven for the area’s women and children, the site is now a fascinating museum. Certainly, visitors will not want to miss the opportunity to visit the home of President Ulysses S. Grant to learn more about one of America’s great leaders.

Other attractions close by include Adventure Creek Alpaca Farm. This is a wonderful place for children and adults to have the opportunity to interact with these gentle animals. There are also several ghost tours from Main Street in Galena.

Superb Skiing and Great Hiking are Available

While there is much history captured in the museums and attractions, visitors may also want to explore the region’s many outdoor activities. Close to the town, visitors can enjoy summer activities like hiking and biking as well as horseback riding. During the winter, the Chestnut Mountain Resort offers skiing and snowboarding. The resort has 19 trails to suit all levels of skier and includes a 475-foot vertical drop, and a seven-acre terrain area with over 25 jumps and rails. The mountain is set in the hills near the town and is perfect for a day trip.

At the Alice T. Virtue Memorial Water Park, visitors can enjoy the pool, waterslide, drop slide, children’s pool and much more. Here, there is also a beautiful hiking and biking trail that offers a cross country skiing area in winter.
