A recent addition to the town’s attractions is the Old Blacksmiths Shop, tracing the history of blacksmithing over 100 years. It is still a working shop and lucky visitors will be able to watch the blacksmiths at work. Stop by the Old Market House which was the original focal point for the surrounding communities in the 1800s. On Cobblestone Street is the site of the Old Stockade. This 1832-building was built in preparation for an attack by local Indians. Originally a safe haven for the area’s women and children, the site is now a fascinating museum. Certainly, visitors will not want to miss the opportunity to visit the home of President Ulysses S. Grant to learn more about one of America’s great leaders.
Other attractions close by include Adventure Creek Alpaca Farm. This is a wonderful place for children and adults to have the opportunity to interact with these gentle animals. There are also several ghost tours from Main Street in Galena.
Superb Skiing and Great Hiking are Available
While there is much history captured in the museums and attractions, visitors may also want to explore the region’s many outdoor activities. Close to the town, visitors can enjoy summer activities like hiking and biking as well as horseback riding. During the winter, the Chestnut Mountain Resort offers skiing and snowboarding. The resort has 19 trails to suit all levels of skier and includes a 475-foot vertical drop, and a seven-acre terrain area with over 25 jumps and rails. The mountain is set in the hills near the town and is perfect for a day trip.
At the Alice T. Virtue Memorial Water Park, visitors can enjoy the pool, waterslide, drop slide, children’s pool and much more. Here, there is also a beautiful hiking and biking trail that offers a cross country skiing area in winter.
