"Our stay was very comfortable the neighbors were friendly and the neighborhood was quiet. The house updated, neat and clean as portrayed in the photos. The southshore is conveniently located to go into Chicago or Michigan City. Plenty of things to do in the area within a convenient drive. The upstairs loft had awesome views of the lake and the Chicago skyline. The MacDougalls were wonderful to work with and we would recommend renting this property."

  • Idyllic and Well-Maintained Getaway Close to Quiet Beaches and to Chicago

"This peaceful property in Beverly Shores made for a fantastic getaway for my wife and two 4 year old boys. The house itself is situated on a quiet, well-manicured lot, surrounded by trees and thoughtful landscaping. The front garden has a multi-level pond/stream, complete with resident frogs and accent lighting for the evening. The back yard is less landscaped, but includes large pine trees and a huge wraparound deck. While you can hear the passing trains along the lakeshore, the environment is peaceful. Outside, you'll also find a gas grill that's like new as well as a hammock, situated among a grove of red pines. The wraparound deck is HUGE and there is plenty of furniture for guests to lounge and an outdoor sectional, ideal for an afternoon nap. There is also a very large hot tub near the gas grill that's clean, easy to operate and in great shape. Finally, there is a huge firepit, surrounded by new wooden Adirondack chairs. The house, itself, is in immaculate condition. Built in 1948, the owners have updated the house throughout while maintaining the integrity of the structure. The A/C is virtually silent and the bathrooms are fully updated, despite the age of the property. All the beds are in great shape with firm mattresses and clean sheets. The kitchen is a bit small, but the appliances are all new and high-end. There is an expansive dining area with huge picture windows and a field-stone gas fireplace. There are more than enough beds and bathrooms to accommodate a fairly large group. Wifi and Dish network are also included (so the kids won't drive you crazy). The property is located less than a mile from the Indiana Dunes, featuring sparsely populated beaches. You're also not far from Michigan City, so shopping is very convenient. Great options for delivery (I recommend Gelsosomo's Pizza) and for take out. There are several decent dining options nearby as well. If you need more than that, you're only an hour or so from Chicago so you can enjoy the tranquility of the Dunes shoreline as well as the nation's third largest city. All in all, I can't think of anything negative to say about our stay. The owners clearly take great pride in the property and that shows in every detail. I strongly recommend this property to anyone seeking a spacious and modern rental, with NO unpleasant surprises and proximity to civilization while also offering a tranquil getaway."

Indiana Travel Tips

Getting to Indiana Vacation Rentals

There are two main travel hubs to Indiana. If you are traveling to the central or southern regions of the state, you will fly to Indianapolis International Airport. The airport hosts all major North American carriers and has regular commercial flight connections. If you are traveling to the far southern parts of Indiana, the most convenient access point would be Louisville International Airport in Kentucky. The airport is located just across the Ohio River which forms the state border with Indiana. For travelers who will be spending their vacations on Lake Michigan and in the northern parts of Indiana, the best airport to travel to would be either Chicago O'Hare International Airport or Chicago Midway International Airport. Technically, this area falls into the greater Chicago Metropolitan area even though it is part of Indiana. From all these airports, there are good public transport links into the cities and surrounding areas. There is an extensive rail network which provides easy access to the major cities. If you prefer, you can also hire a car and drive to your vacation destination.

Attractions and Activities at Indiana Lake Homes

One of the most popular vacation destinations in Indiana is Lake Michigan. The state borders only a small portion of the lakeshore but it is where many of the vacation homes are concentrated. Because Indiana is on the southeastern shoreline, visitors can benefit from magnificent sunsets over the lake. Favorite pastimes include fishing and boating. Many of the lakeside communities are quite seasonal and become hives of activity during the summer months. There are often fishing tournaments and other fun-filled events that take place in season.

If you want to explore some of the lakeshore, you can hire a canoe or kayak and go for a leisurely paddle. There are several State Parks where you can enjoy nature trails, go for hikes and spend the early morning birdwatching. The Dunes State Park is a section of land along the Lake Michigan shoreline which is ideal for wildlife viewing. There are many other state parks in Indiana where you can go hiking or mountain biking. In the south central part of Indiana, you can visit the Bluespring Caverns in Bedford where you take a boat ride through the caves. Indiana has a rich cultural heritage and this is evidenced by the many museums dotted throughout the state. Several are dedicated specifically to the artistic heritage of Indiana.

Visitors to Indiana Cottages

Indiana is a great family vacation destination. Whether you are fishing along the shore of Lake Michigan or hiking a nature trail, there are many different outdoor activities that you can enjoy as a family. There are also several fun amusement parks that offer rides and entertainment for kids of all ages. For those who have an interest in art and culture, there are many art galleries and museums in the major towns and cities in Indiana. If you are an outdoor-type person and want to explore nature, there are many state parks where you can go mountain biking or hiking along the nature trails.

Seasons to Visit Indiana

Indiana has attractions that can be enjoyed throughout the year. For those who want to enjoy the lakes and parks, the best time of year to visit would be during the summer months. The temperatures are generally hot with the occasional thunderstorms. The peak travel season is during the months of July and August which coincide with the summer vacation season. Many families choose this time of year to have an extended family vacation.
