"A wonderfully updated home with everything you could possibly need. Owner went above and beyond in ensuring we had everything we needed. The location is perfect: minutes away from campus and a quick drive to downtown. The sun room behind the kitchen was the perfect place for enjoying our morning coffee. Also enjoyed the front porch swing in the evenings, the neighborhood was very quiet. The week we stayed was extremely hot & humid and the A/C did a great job of keeping the house comfortable. As others have mentioned, the 2 bedrooms are upstairs and the bathroom downstairs, it was not an issue for us, but it is something to consider if one has difficulty navigating stairs. Overall, an enjoyable stay and would stay again."

"What a beautiful, serene setting any time of year. Though I only stayed by myself, the lodge was large enough for multiple families. It was an excellent and relaxing getaway. I went for long walks in nature (an unusually warm day for Jan) and enjoyed the sunshine on the back porch. Saw deer, pheasant, horses, cattle and tons of birds. When it finally got cold I went indoors for the warmth of the fireplace."

"The family (15 people, ages 7-67) returned to Rod's cabin on the lake. We have been anticipating a return since our initial visit last year. Although the space fits our family well, we were disappointed to discover that the cleaning crew had not been at the property since the last tenants vacated. I wish I had called Rod on Friday when we discovered this, but I called him on Monday before I left instead. He told me he would have sent the crew out to rectify the situation ASAP if I had. (Instead, my sisters and I just pitched in and took care of the problem.) He was very apologetic as well. We love, love, love this place...and I am sure we will probably return, but some of the recommended repairs and maintenance had not been completed. Some had. The bridge had been repaired, but the ladders on the docks were still both loose (one even fell off while we were there). I think that Rod trusts his crew to get the job done...and they don't always do that. We had a great time, but the lack of clean linens, full trash cans, dirty dishes, and lots of spider webs, wasp nests, and bird nests populating the outside areas really put a damper in our trip. As I said, we will probably be back; we have too much fun not to go back. But some serious maintenance, especially outdoors, is needed for this rental. This property is a one of a kind place; I hope in the next year that it gets the attention it deserves."

"It hurts to give Elaine's Prairie Home four stars because probably any other week of the year I'd hike it up to five. The place is exactly what it tells you it is: a little old frame home in a town that's barely a town. You can't get a Big Mac anywhere close or walk to the pool. But that wasn't a surprise. We knew that long before we pulled into Matfield Green. What we didn't count on--and should have--is the sheer power of the heat, lots of it, Death Valley-like heat, the kind of heat that shriveled crops up in a day during the dirty Thirties. That dear little place--it's beautifully decorated--simply isn't the place to be when the temps sky like they did during our long weekend there. Elaine's Prairie Home has wonderful air conditioners in both bedrooms--really good ones; but the rest of the house got hot. Really hot. So did we.
But it's a darling place, and it's in the middle of jaw-dropping landscapes so brightly emerald they'll take your breath away. I loved the region. The Flint Hills are simply immense. Nowhere else in the states is there anything like the tall-grass prairie all around Matfield Green. And right there in the middle is Elaine's Prairie Home, a place that clearly offers its love the region of the country where it sits so admirably.
It's a wonderful place, really--but not when it's hot."
