The best waterfront vacation rental in Stonington Maine
"The best waterfront vacation rental
home in Stonington, Maine is "The Stronghold." We used this home as our central headquarters for our 35th wedding anniversary, family vacation. The owner has gone to great effort to make this home an exceptional beauty and the most memorable resort experience. Standing amongst neighboring, gray siding homes stands this magnificent, recently renovated masterpiece. Located on a private lane on Stonington's waterfront, you are welcomed with an inviting back porch, complete with conversational chairs, windchimes, and croquet for the manicured front or rear yard gaming. The waterfront has a magnificent quarried stone bulkhead and flowering landscaped yard, with two kayaks waiting for you to explore the harbor a nearby islands.
The owner, Sallie Strong, has literally thought of everything. Both a gas grill and charcoal grill are on site waiting for your cooking preference. Typically Maine rentals in this area are austere. However this home has Wi-Fi, multiple TVs with DVDs or cable. The duel kitchens were especially useful for our multi families' food storage, prep and cleanup. The main kitchen even has a trash compactor. There are multiple indoor and outdoor rooms for relaxing, watching the lobster boats in the harbor, and enjoying leisurely or formal meals.
We admired the decorating as every niche had a unique curio, painting, photo or nautical artifact to admire. The bright room colors and comfortable beds were specially inviting.
We have rented four different homes on Deer Isle in recent years. While this home was the most expensive to rent, it was by far the best value. Given the ideal location, the amenities, and the overall experience, I would highly recommend it."

"This was our family's first visit to Maine and Acadia. Renting this house was the best plan we made for the trip. The quiet serenity, the wildlife, and the scenery were all amazing. The house is rustic like a cabin and well equipped like a family home. We spent our mornings watching harbor seals and identifying birds including bald eagles, osprey, loons, cormorants, various woodpeckers (including a pileated pair), kingfishers, and forest songbirds. An eagle landed in a tree right off the deck when were were eating our first breakfast. We were visited by deer and red squirrels. We hated to leave and cannot wait to return. Tern II is an enchanting place to spend a week or more. Definitely bring binoculars, even if you are not an active birder. Also: The restaurants in the small towns around the island are outstanding. Red Sky and Sips in Southwest Harbour are excellent, just to name two."

"Our family of six adults and one infant enjoyed this historic home in Blue Hill. We travelled to Acadia/Bar Harbor for three days, it's about an hour each way. One day we stayed in Blue Hill and climbed Blue Hill mountain and walked along the waterfront, and one day we drove up to Campobello Island to see FDR's summer cottage. We saved some money by stocking up at the grocery store within walking distaqnce and eating in for breakfast and lunch. The house was very comfortable and was a unique Maine experience. We did not request cable as we wanted uninterrupted time - I would recommend it for families or anyone wanting to spend time together."

Beautiful views, awesome property, nice owners and caretaker
"We loved this place. The house is old and charming, a typical Cape farmhouse on a beautiful lot overlooking the Northern Bay. The owners checked in on us to make sure everything was ok and their Down East native caretaker stopped in a couple of times to say hi. Lovely old barn, meadow, and creek with lots of wildlife to photograph (even Eagles and Bobolinks aka skunk birds!). Great centralized location for exploring Castine, Bucksport, Bar Harbor (Bah Hahbah). We'd like to rent again some day in the future. :) Recommend seeing Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory nearby and the snack bar just down the road."
