"If you want a place where you can get directly into the mountains, this is it! From this house we hiked up the South Ridge of Cadillac Mountain, to the North Ridge - all the way on trails into Bar Harbor. We also did a nice hike that started at Sand Beach, up the Bee hive, over Gorham Mountain, to the Otter Cliffs and through a surprise shortcut path right back to our house. You can't beat this location. Not only can you get out quickly for short or long hikes, you can also hop on or off the Island Explorer Bus that stops right outside the house.
The house itself was great, too. We stayed with my parents, adult brother and our young son. Everyone had their own spacious bedroom (the photos don't quite convey how large the rooms are). The kitchen was well stocked (though the pots could use some updating and deep cleaning) and the appliances all were in good working condition. The house had lots of travel guides, maps and tourist information - so we didn't need to look anything up. The living room couches were a bit tired and saggy, but there were other adequate seating options, too. The beds were comfy and we even got a change of sheets (which was nice because we needed the flannel early in the week and the cotton sheets when it got a little warmer).
I don't view this to be negative, but some may - there was no cell phone reception. However, they have a phone there for local calls and emergencies. Honestly, I loved not being able to stay connected while I was on vacation, so it didn't bother me. The internet wi-fi was fast and reliable, so if you must...you can.
It was great to have a rental with nice towels, linens, toilet paper and basic soap supplies too. I thought the towel allotment was more than adequate, especially with the washer and dryer available.
Thanks - if we're going to Acadia next year, we'll definitely book again!"

"We were 2 60-somethings and 3 young adults. We knew Mount Desert Island from previous weekend trips to Maine, but we'd always stayed in a hotel in Bar Harbor. This was a much better plan. The house was perfect for us. We spent our trip hiking in Acadia. So happy to be away from the tourist crush in Bar Harbor, yet within an easy drive of the park and all of Mount Desert's restaurants. The layout of good kitchen plus dining and living areas meant we had plenty of space to hang out together."

"Cannot say enough about the wonderful time we had in Maine. Before our arrival, Bob answered all of our questions about the area and gave us lots of ideas of things to do. We highly recommend Blunt's pond (just a couple of miles from the cottage) for swimming since the water in front of the house was too cold to enjoy. We arrived to fresh blueberry scones and a gorgeous view. We rented a canoe for our family of 6 because the kayak rental prices were a bit steep. Bob gave us excellent advice on when to enjoy the canoe the most, mornings and evenings. We spent so much time exploring the ever-changing beach in front of the cottage finding snails, fish, crabs, mussels, and a sea star. We were even lucky enough to see a seal up close two evenings when we canoed out to Googin's ledge. We spent most of our daytime hiking in Acadia with our 4 children varying in ages from 1 to 13. The Ocean Path was perfect for our family because we could push the baby stroller up on the path while the older children climbed on the rocks down below. The path around Jordan's Pond was another of our favorites. You can enjoy an easy 3 mile path or choose to hike up to Bubble Rock half way around. Another highlight of our stay was enjoying a LuLu Lobster tour at low tide. We saw lots of seals and Captain John did an excellent job of sharing his knowledge of lobstering.
We enjoyed dinner on the deck most evenings and our last evening Barb brought us a cup of fresh picked blueberries from their back yard. Delicious!
The days were warm and the evenings cool. We slept with the windows open and awoke to the sight of lobster boats heading out to check their traps in the morning. Truly an unforgettable experience!"

"This was our first trip to Mount Desert Island and I could not think of a better place to stay. The cabin was rustic, cozy and very well stocked with all of the day to day essentials. And the location was perfect, nestled among the many trails and a very short drive (no more than 20 minutes max.) to Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Bar Harbor and the entrance to Acadia National Park. We stayed warm on the cool September evenings with the living room fireplace and master bedroom wood stove and the wood pile, like the rest of the cabin was well stocked! The view of Echo Lake was incredible and we took full advantage of our own private dock to kayak every day. Thank you to Claire for being extremely accommodating and for providing quick responses to our inquiries. This will be our preferred lodging for our next trip to MDI!"
