"We stayed in August with our 3 year old daughter and had a wonderful vacation. Our daughter could have spent the entire week happily picking the berries on the property. The house is secluded and private, but conveniently located. We walked to town and the farmers' market, and made short drives to Sand Beach, Red Barn Farm, and the wonderful trails throughout the island maintained by Island Heritage Trust. Our daughter loved the model of the quarry operations at the Granite Museum, and we enjoyed cooking in the Forge's kitchen as well as eating out in town. Wilda is a wonderful caretaker of the property. She has great information about Stonington and the island, and she generously gifted us with fresh vegetables from her garden. We will stay at the forge again the next time we visit Maine!"Guest: David Date of Stay: August 2014 Review Submitted: September 3, 2014View listing
"Such an amazing house - layout, location, amenities - all of it contributed to our relaxing and fun-filled family vacation. We visited with our 2 kids (3 and 5 years old) and their grandparents. Kids loved running around the back deck/porch that wraps around half the house. Sunset dinners on the deck. Lobster feast with fresh lobsters from the lobster co-op - 2 lobster pots and as many shell crackers and pick you could need. Kayaking among the sleeping lobster boats at sunset with the gorgeous "Stonington light." Just sitting in the living room, facing the harbor, and watching the graceful action on the harbor - meditative. Master suite is spacious and set apart from the other bedrooms which are located on the 2nd floor. Plenty of places in the house for sharing a family meal - in the dining room, the breakfast area, table on the back deck, picnic table on the dock. And, plenty of places to kick back and relax around the house - reclining chairs on the back deck, daybed in the front of the house, comfy living room sofa, additional living room chairs. All times of day are beautiful times of day at this house - don't miss the amazing stars in the night sky! Walk to everything on Main Street including the excellent restaurant Aragosta. Two doors down from the Factory Tavern restaurant which makes it convenient to try to secure a last minute reservation. A few steps up the hill from the Isle Au Haut mailboat ferry to secure your 'first come, first served" ferry tickets in the morning. A short drive to Sand Beach (so much more than your typical beach - be sure to check it out), Barred Island (magical hike through moss carpeted woods to the island - go around low tide (+/- 3 hours), and take the kids to Nervous Nellie's - in addition to making and selling jam, there's entertaining and eccentric art on a life-sized scale. Also, a short drive to sailboat rentals (and other vessels) at Old Quarry Adventures. A short drive to Burnt Cove Market for groceries. We spent 2 weeks in Stonington, the 2nd week in this house - could not have been better. Make sure to take advantage of the kayaks - sunset is the best time of day - no traffic in the harbor, beautiful setting, seal spotting. Plenty of lifejackets provided for adults and kids. We've stayed in many vacation rental houses over the years in different areas of the country for family vacations and this was definitely one of the best!"Guest: Amie H. "We had a wonderful time at this house. It was new, clean, roomy and had absolutely everything we needed for a relaxing vacation! The porch was wonderful with the water views. Kayaks were also a nice add. Local lobster was great for a dinner at home. Would recommend for anyone wanting a quiet time away from the city."Guest: Southerner Date of Stay: June 2014 Review Submitted: July 30, 2014View listing
"This property is everything described above. It is in a lovely location and is extroadinarily clean and well equipped. However, it is not suitable for 2 couples or even for a family with children as the only access to the bathroom is through the master bedroom. And while it is waterfront, it is not easy to reach the water so other locations are needed to launch a boat or kayak."Guest: Sandra S.
