  • Million dollar view

"A clean and cozy cottage with with an amazing view across the waters of Frenchman's Bay to the mountains of Acadia -- and the cruise ships visiting Bar Harbor! We loved the place, despite the fact that certain aspects have gone beyond shabby/chic to just plain shabby. This mid-century cottage needs some sprucing up, not to make it chic or luxurious, but keep it reasonably attractive and in good working order. I think the people who would rent this place would be, like us, interested in savoring the beauties of the place, and would not be using the cottage merely as a place to sleep. It's distance from the noise and crowds is one of its chief features, and so a little more attention to the upkeep of the cottage would guarantee that folks like us would rave about the place and we would make a point of returning. I checked the box to recommend this cottage for those over 55 but should include the caveat that the lawn is treacherously uneven and that there's quite a drop from the first stair to the lawn. This comes as a surprise especially when one is going out. Otherwise the one-floor layout is ideal."

  • Amazing light!

"Beach surf provided us a lovely spot for our fall getaway. From the first morning light to the spectacular sunsets, the views were breath-taking. Almost every room on the harbor side provides wall to wall windows. We spent many days watching the lobster boats head out at dawn, the seals bob up and down right out in front of the house, and sitting on the deck at sunset with a glass of wine or two. (We also saw dolphins and a bald eagle!) Other days we headed to Cadillac Mountain or Schoodic Head for hikes and sunrise photos; I wish we could share those. So beautiful. We also bought lobster in Winter Harbor and lunched at the Wrinkled Pickle. So many memories. We would definitely recommend Beach Surf."

  • Fall trip to Acadia

"This was a prefect property for us. The location is terrific for accessing MDI and Bar Harbor as it is located right on route 3. The view out the back is very serene - saw deer on most mornings and evenings - and it is very quiet. The home has everything you need, was very clean and extremely well organized. It was actually so comfortable, we bought fresh fish in Bar Harbor most nights and ate at home. Not that we used it much but the cable TV is very convenient and the Wi-Fi worked great. Would highly recommend this to a couple who is looking for a very comfortable base to explore Acadia from."

  • It was ‘Maine-ly’ about being together…and celebrating. We are grateful for the time and experience!

"It didn’t take us long to decide on a destination, Acadia National Park rose to the top of the list almost immediately. From all of our reading and research, it seemed to offer so many hiking and exploring opportunities and (even though it would take a while) some of us could drive. Finally, we would have a long-awaited vacation with our grown children—and we had a lot to celebrate. For this momentous occasion, we wanted a truly special place to stay…Devilstone Carriage/Guesthouse offered that! The VRBO description items that caught our attention instantly were “3 king-size beds, 4 baths, and short walk to town”—we would all have a commodious space and we could walk when we wanted to dine out. Although it sounded quite inviting, since we had never been to Bar Harbor we did not fully appreciate the “Shorepath seating”…we do now! Although one of us bicycled at times, we did need a car to travel the short distance to Acadia each day. (The free Island Explorer bus had not started running yet for the season.) However, we did not need all the stuff we packed (we hadn’t been on a ‘road trip’ in a while) because our home for the week was as “beautifully furnished and fully equipped” as described. We did not have the pleasure of meeting John, the owner, in person—but at every turn we felt his kind and gracious care. Before our visit he was patient and helpful as we pinned down many details. From the moment we stepped into his home—heard the melodious music and found the delicious food items he provided to get us started—we felt greeted and welcome. Through many strategically placed notes, John seemed to anticipate our questions. The written information and suggestions added to our ease and comfort. We also appreciated and took advantage of his restaurant recommendations—and agree they are great! In closing, we will offer this—in case the words “very private” didn’t pop out when you read the description. All around us there were things to do and see. We packed a lot of exhausting, exhilarating activity into each day as we visited Acadia National Park and in the evening the town of Bar Harbor is bustling with its many restaurants and shops. Still…in the morning when we would wake to the song sparrow or walk a few steps to sip our coffee and see the sunrise from the Shorepath…or in the evening when the noises of town would fall away with each step of our short walk towards ‘home’ we truly experienced the private, secluded peace of the place. Our trip was indeed a JOY!"
