"The web description doesn’t do justice to Grey Rocks! It is a well maintained 1890s mansion with all modern conveniences, in a gorgeous setting, with beautiful flowers in the yard and on the deck. It’s very private, at the end of a long gravel drive, woods on three sides and the rocky beach on the other. The back lawn is great for romping dogs and playing kids, and the full-length back deck is wonderful for picnics and hanging out and looking at the ocean, where you see (and hear) lobster boats going by. The kitchen is well-stocked with pots and pans, the dishwasher and laundry machines work well, and while there are only two showers in the four bathrooms, everything worked. We (ten people, two dogs) loved the house and the location** which made for an idyllic vacation.
** Five minutes walk to Thurston’s Lobster Pound – no parking hassle!"

"My husband and 14 year old spent a week here, our first visit to Acadia. The pictures just do not do this jewel of a home justice. What an enchanting place. Beautifully remodeling of this 1903 family home, complete with evidence of family love and nurturing, where you can look in every nook and cranny and find the owners' personal touches providing everything anyone could ever need or want. Waking up in the huge master bedroom with the view of the harbor made me feel like I never wanted to leave the room. A incredibly well appointed kitchen also with every item you could ever want or need. The great room leading out to the spacious deck was heavenly. And let's not forget the grounds. Front back and sides all lsndscaped beautifully. The care taken in this property totally exceeded my expectations. Oh- and the bookshelves! I wanted to read every book in the house! I not only loved the house, but felt a closeness with the family that owns it. Just the way they have everything as I would in my own home and the added details that they took care in providing to make it a comfortable and relaxing vacation made this one of the best rental experiences ever.
A word of caution - this is a home that you do not want to treat thoughtlessly - if you do not take care, it would be a terrible shame to see this home "trashed". It is a pristine jewel and we tried to care for it as if it were our own.
As for the location, we loved being on the quiet side of the island, driving around was part of the fun. I would only say the only complaint I have about our vacation was that if we came back i would have to buy my own lobsters and cook them myself. I could not find a hard shelled lobster (so late in the season I suppose- we learned a great deal about the lobster trade, having done two tours) and I felt the restaurants were overpriced. To boot, I often do buy my own lobsters, and I really questioned the how they pass off chicken lobsters as pound and 1/2s. Other than that, everything we did, from relaxing at the house to all the adventures around the island, made this a great vacation! Thank you Reine and Bill and the rest of your family for sharing your home with us!!! Laura and Kevin"

"The pictures of the interior of the Boat House were very accurate. The remodel of the home was tastefully done and up to date. The views of the harbor from the living room were spectacular. We stayed at the end of the season and it was a bit chilly. The heating system was a bit of an issue as the pipes banged at night which interrupted our sleep. We also new it was a working harbor but if you were a light sleeper the fishermen and boats would wake you up early in the morning. We are early risers so that was not an issue. The owners should also let guests know that there is a room attached to the house that harbor/marina folks use. That did startle us when we first heard people in the room. Some other improvements would be to update the linens and towels, connect tv to cable in the bed room , a vacuum cleaner, and to leave instructions on how to use the VCR.
Aside from the few things we mentioned it was a nice place to stay."

"My wife and I had a very enjoyable stay at this cottage. It is perfect for two people looking for a home base to virtually anywhere on Mt. Desert Island. The kitchen was very well equipped with anything a traveler may need (the coffee filters were particularly appreciated). We found the patio to be quite lovely in the morning and a nice way to rest weary legs at the end of the day. A few items that are important to note for future visitors. First, the cottage is on Rt. 102, which means there is some car noise from 6:00 am until early evening. Rt. 102 has a limited shoulder and is not suitable for safe running/walking, in my opinion. Second, the bedroom faces east, making it rather bright in the morning even with a shade and blinds. The final point is not related to the cottage though worth noting. Bass Harbor is remotely located relative to the rest of the island. Southwest Harbor is less than 5 minutes away, but Bar Harbor can be as much as 45 minutes with traffic. Overall, a great place for a couple looking to get away from it all and take in the pleasures of the quiet side (be sure to go over to Seawall with a bottle of wine and some cheese, it's totally legal!)."
