  • Simply Perfect!

"The Wayfaring Mermaid Suite is simply gorgeous...it is one of the few places I have visited where the actual property is even better than the photos. My mom and I were able to enjoy this beautiful apartment in the most perfect location, along with my 2 year-old daughter. It is clean, well- stocked, comfortable, well appointed...I was able to set up a pack and play in the bedroom, and my mom used the sofa sleeper in the main room. She said it was very comfortable, and she loved the breeze from the open windows! The bedroom bed was just as wonderful as my own bed! Monique and Joe are both so kind, and the attention to detail when building this unit is very impressive! Joe is a highly skilled craftsman, and he handcrafted the entire apartment...gorgeous (I know I am using this word a great deal...but, it's the best word to describe this place). The courtyard, which we didn't get to spend nearly enough time enjoying, was adorable... We were able to walk to the Chart House Restaurant, which is just steps from the apartment; we also took advantage of the ice cream shop at the end of the street, as well! The rocky beach (also steps from the apartment), was the perfect spot for photos! It was a quick two minute drive to the Acadia National Park and just minutes to downtown Bar Harbor. You must visit Cadillac Mountain! I lived in Hawaii for two years (which has always been my favorite place on earth), and I really think Bar Harbor and the park might have moved past the islands:) We took a little drive to Bass Harbor, which was also gorgeous (beautiful sunset by the lighthouse). If you're looking for the perfect place to in the most perfect location...this is exactly where you need to stay! I hope to be able to return and enjoy this property with my husband!"

  • Very clean charming waterfront home that fit our family well. Pet Friendly too!

"We loved all the room to spread out and the large yard for our dog to be able to run and get some exercise too! The house is very clean and well stocked. We found everything we needed. There are two bedrooms upstairs and one bath. Downstairs is another bath, mud room, laundry room, living room/dining and a den. The furniture is comfortable and everything makes you feel right at home in "Maine". The only reason this didn't get a perfect 5 star rating from us was because of the closeness to the slightly busy street and the noise you hear very early in the AM from the lobster boats/fisherman. This is of no fault of the house or owner - and may not bother many. But, for us as light sleepers we had a few rough spots in our sleep. The views from the dining room and deck are amazing - we had a couple gorgeous sunsets similar the picture posted above. We brought high end kayaks and felt ok about leaving them beside the garage. It was great to load the kayak right into the harbor at the edge of the lawn- very convenient. We kayaked once at Echo lake but, mostly just paddled throughout the harbor and explored a little island. There a few restaurants down the street in 'town' and if you cross the harbor you find Thurstons- this place proved to be WAY too busy for us as many were lined up outside - not a good choice if you have a child... Southwest harbor a quick 10 min drive away has many more restaurants. We brought our dog along and he loved laying on the deck - there was a handy hose near the deck which was useful to wash the dog after a swim or a walk along the shore. Do be prepared for bugs - we used bug spray almost every night and I brought a citronella candle which we used as well. The shore is tidal and you can walk out quite a distance - we walked the shore daily and found many "treasures". My son became addicted to finding "sea glass" - I had to explain that the broken fresh glass is just trash and to look for only the frosted kind... let's just say we had a lot of "extra" LOL - but, my one of favorite things to do since being a child and visiting my grandparents in Searsport... If you want to explore Acadia and the Down East - but don't want the hussle bussle of Bar Harbor then this would be a good option for you. We prefer quite nights and peaceful surroundings. Paul, the owner is very accommodating and very quick with any questions/concerns you may have. Thank you for sharing your vacation home with us!"

  • What a great retreat!!

"We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Bass Terre! This house is in a beautiful spot - a private cove with amazing ocean vistas! The grounds are well kept with lots of flowers - a comfortable deck and only one distant neighbor. The house is over 100 years old but in great condition - bathrooms, appliances and cable TV all work just fine. The bedrooms and mattresses are good and with the silence and cool night breezes, we all slept like babies! The living/dining area is spacious and all 5 adults (of varying ages) were very comfortable there. If we get back to Maine and Bass Terre some day, we will definitely take our dogs - there's a huge garage attached to the house that works if they're wet or need to be confined while you're out and about. The owners provided an excellent list of restaurants and activities that we used daily to plan our outings. Acadia National Park is the highlight and we spent several days exploring different parts of the park - including the top of Cadillac Mountain, Loop Drive along the rocky shore, the popovers at Jordan Pond and several hikes around lakes. We found Bar Harbor to be a crowded tourist trap so we wandered through some of the smaller fishing village shops and restaurants. Southwest Harbor, Somesville and Northeast Harbor are all charming villages. We highly recommend seeing Asticou Gardens! But most of all, we enjoyed returning to Bass Terre in the evening and watching the sun set."

  • Beautiful and quiet

"We just spent several glorious days here, same time as last year. This was a trip worth repeating in order to run the Mt. Desert Island Marathon again. We saw a rather large buck twice, each time out by the road in the area of the apple trees along the split rail fence. We enjoyed taking the canoe out on Hodgdon Pond and paddling around. We discovered a waterfall on the Acadia Park side of the pond and took a little hike in that area. - how stunning! And what a beautiful place to wallk to. So many little pathways and clearing and ponds to explore. If the night sky is clear, the stars are giant saucers splattered just inches above the cottage ) or so it seems). I think the best part is the crisp pine-scented air combined with the autumn kaleidoscope of colors.. A feast for the senses. Ray and Laura from Texas and Noreen from Pennsylvania"
