Perfect Family Reunion Venue
"My extended family stayed a week at the Captain Nathan Clark house and we found it an ideal location for our family reunion. The house itself is historic and beautiful, and with it's innumerable additions and remodels over many decades it has a funky charm as well. We found it as comfortable as an old shoe! It actually has two kitchens (which we designated as "food" and "beverage") 2 family rooms, as well as a formal dining room with a view of the harbor. The layout allows for many people to cook and eat together, but also to find space to spread out and find peace and quiet. There are two different outside porch areas and extensive yards and gardens. My teenage kids enjoyed the fascinating old books and great collection of games and puzzles.
It is only a 1 minute walk to Beal's Lobster Pier, where we ate MANY times during the week (and also watched an amazing fireworks display on the Fourth), and an easy stroll into town. A great surprise and wonderful addition to town is the Common Good Cafe, where for a donation to the local soup kitchen you can eat your fill of the BEST popovers on the island (Sorry, Jordan Pond House!). Another nice surprise: just a very short walk up the side street to the lovely grounds of the Claremont Hotel and Xanthus restaurant and dockside cocktail bar. It was nice to be staying in the relative tranquility of Southwest Harbor with bustling Bar Harbor being still just a short drive away. Southwest Harbor is real "working water" with fishing boats, Coast Guard and more. It was a great reunion and we will be back!"

"My wife and I spent a week at Shelley's vacation home. We had a wonderful time. The home is very clean, nicely decorated, comfortable, secluded and there were lots of flowers outside. We enjoyed staying on the quite side of the island, it was nice to come home to tranquility after doing the park loop. Shelley was close by and very helpful if we had questions, but gave us complete privacy.
A couple points of interest that are close by, we ate 3 times at Thurston's Lobster Pound across the harbor, the locals tell us this is the best place to eat lobster. My wife and I brought kayaks and we put in at Pretty Marsh (Bartlet' Landing). The water was calm as it is protected by Bartlet's Island. While kayaking we saw dolphins, seals and a bald eagle. This landing is interesting at low tide since there are starfish everywhere.
If you are going to Acadia National Park, I recommend staying at Shelley's vacation home."

"Sow's Ear is the perfect destination and home base for an MDI vacation. The pictures do not show the lovely attention to details and the cozy, comfortable nature of the cottage. There was plenty of room for a family of four. The kitchen is well stocked, the bathrooms are immaculate, the bedrooms are spotless and comfortable, and the neighbors and owners are friendly and helpful. Our teenage boys took part in a daily adventure/rock climbing camp located in Bar Harbor, which allowed my husband and I long leisurely days exploring the island and relaxing. Some of the best carriage roads are about a mile away. I could not imagine a better home base on MDI. However, I would not recommend this home for travelers with small children. There are too many interesting things to touch!"

"If you are searching for a spectacular and comfortable home with an EXCEPTIONAL view, search no further because you have found it! As the previous reviewer stated, the pictures of this "beautiful, upscale home can't capture the delight of being there" is spot on. This beautiful home has everything you are looking for: a beautiful view that overlooks Southwest Harbor; a gorgeous backyard, deck and screened in porch; a tastefully decorated interior first floor with a gorgeous, fully equipped modern kitchen, hardwood floors and a master bedroom that offers a comfortable bed, wonderful master bath and French doors to the screened in porch. (Just a small bit of advice, check the dryer downstairs if you don't find many dish and bathroom towels. We thought we would have to go and buy some towels but not the case. Housekeeping must have forgotten about the last load of laundry.) It was so tranquil to watch the lobster boats in the morning from bed. It truly doesn't get any better than that. The upstairs is just as beautiful with two large bedrooms and is carpeted. We absolutely loved spending time out on the deck that offered comfortable outdoor furniture and a large heating lamp. Nothing better than enjoying our breakfast and in the evening, appetizers and wine, listening to the water lap over the rocks to the shore. Whatever you are hoping for in a rental home, this home accommodates. Because we were in Acadia at the beginning of Sept, there was a full moon, and the view was amazing! We also had the pleasure of having a nightly evening walkthrough by a Mama deer and her baby and were thrilled when a bald eagle perched right on the backyard rocks to have its morning breakfast! As mentioned, this home is in Southwest Harbor but it was not a far ride to Bar Harbor or the Park. Actually, it gives you an opportunity to see more of the island by having to drive to key viewing spots at the Park. Also, because we visited Acadia in early September, Bar Harbor was not overly crowded, which was great. There is so much to do and see that we will go back to Acadia. The weather was perfect and the house as the review title states, "Simply Perfection"."
