"Bass Harbor Retreat was a great place to stay for our Maine vacation. It is a charming cottage with lots of personality. We loved the harbor views, fire pit, flowers, and house. You can tell the owner has put a lot of thought and effort into hosting guests. The small town location in Bernard gave us a glimpse of life in Maine more than if we had stayed in Bar Harbor. We enjoyed walking around, seeing the working lobster harbor, and relaxing on the porch. We did drive to hike in Acadia quite a bit and by the end of the week were tired of making the drive. Don't stay here if you want to be in the middle of the action in Bar Harbor. Do stay here if you would like to enjoy a small town, Maine setting. Go by a pie from one of the pie huts along the road, walk to get the best fresh lobster at Thurston's Lobster Pound, and enjoy a beautiful setting and cozy house. Thanks for a great stay!"

"My husband, daughter and future son-in-law had a fantastic 1st trip to MDI and staying at the chalet made it a perfect vacation. We spent a week and enjoyed all the different activities in the area and the park loop road. In the morning we enjoyed sitting on the deck drinking coffee and planning our day. At night we relaxed after our busy day with a cocktail, cards and lounging around. Comfy couch and two easy chairs worked out great. Nice open area with large table for eating and nice kitchen with all the appliances that you would want or need. Loved the bedrooms upstairs, especially ours which looked out at the water! Very private, clean and comfortable! With lots of windows to make it nice and bright! Can't wait to go back."

Very clean charming waterfront home that fit our family well. Pet Friendly too!
"We loved all the room to spread out and the large yard for our dog to be able to run and get some exercise too!
The house is very clean and well stocked. We found everything we needed. There are two bedrooms upstairs and one bath. Downstairs is another bath, mud room, laundry room, living room/dining and a den. The furniture is comfortable and everything makes you feel right at home in "Maine".
The only reason this didn't get a perfect 5 star rating from us was because of the closeness to the slightly busy street and the noise you hear very early in the AM from the lobster boats/fisherman. This is of no fault of the house or owner - and may not bother many. But, for us as light sleepers we had a few rough spots in our sleep.
The views from the dining room and deck are amazing - we had a couple gorgeous sunsets similar the picture posted above. We brought high end kayaks and felt ok about leaving them beside the garage. It was great to load the kayak right into the harbor at the edge of the lawn- very convenient. We kayaked once at Echo lake but, mostly just paddled throughout the harbor and explored a little island.
There a few restaurants down the street in 'town' and if you cross the harbor you find Thurstons- this place proved to be WAY too busy for us as many were lined up outside - not a good choice if you have a child... Southwest harbor a quick 10 min drive away has many more restaurants.
We brought our dog along and he loved laying on the deck - there was a handy hose near the deck which was useful to wash the dog after a swim or a walk along the shore.
Do be prepared for bugs - we used bug spray almost every night and I brought a citronella candle which we used as well.
The shore is tidal and you can walk out quite a distance - we walked the shore daily and found many "treasures". My son became addicted to finding "sea glass" - I had to explain that the broken fresh glass is just trash and to look for only the frosted kind... let's just say we had a lot of "extra" LOL - but, my one of favorite things to do since being a child and visiting my grandparents in Searsport...
If you want to explore Acadia and the Down East - but don't want the hussle bussle of Bar Harbor then this would be a good option for you. We prefer quite nights and peaceful surroundings.
Paul, the owner is very accommodating and very quick with any questions/concerns you may have.
Thank you for sharing your vacation home with us!"

"My sister and I have rented houses all over MDI for the past few years. Sow's Ear is by far one of the best we have rented. The house was clean upon arrival, the kitchen was well stocked with everything to prepare meals, the beds were really comfortable, and there were no plumbing or heating problems. The house and yard were such that the house has lots of privacy and is quiet. There are multiple options for locations around the house to enjoy reading apart from the activities in the living room. The furniture is very comfortable! There's reliable internet and a nice office to work in if you need to. The location is perfect for access to the carriage trails at Brown Gatehouse as well as the Stanley Brook entrance to ANP, Jordan Pond and the Loop Road. The Northeast Harbor/Seal Harbor area has the most beautiful houses on the island, so the drive home to the rental is always a treat. The owners were the most responsive we've had the pleasure of dealing with so far. They are as charming as the house itself. We really enjoyed this rental, and you will too."
