  • The Perfect Place

"The lovely old, yet quite modern, Captain Bickford House in Winter Harbor was an ideal place to see all the sights, yet have a nice, quiet place to come "home" to after a busy day of seeing Mid-Coast and Downeast Maine. Acadia National Park is a 45-minute drive away, but you have your own piece of it just 5 minutes away in the Schoodic Peninsula - a much more peaceful, relaxed and enjoyable place to be. Add to that the loads of galleries and artists, stunning views around every bend, and a major airport (Bangor) only an hour away, and this is the ideal place to be! P.S. Be sure to walk over to Chase's for breakfast (or lunch or dinner) for some of the best blueberry pancakes this side of the Mississippi!"

  • Peaceful Perfection

"My husband and I recently concluded our stay here and highly recommend this property. This is a perfect spot for those looking for peace and quiet, raw coastal beauty, and a slower pace. We love the area and have visited many times before, but we had never actually stayed in Winter Harbor. We will certainly be back! The listing (pictures, amenities and all), was right on! The condo was clean and attractive, and had all the necessities (including iron/ironing board and hair dryer). My husband had forgotten to pack our Maine Gazeteer, and we were delighted to find one in the condo. We love the Fisherman's Inn, where we have celebrated a number of wedding anniversaries, including this one. It is less than a 5 minute walk from the condo! The lobster pie, scallops, and strawberry rhubarb crisp are delicious! Chase's is a short ride down the street and is also very good. We found very good blueberry muffins at the Schoodic Visitor Center, and enjoyed snacks (salmon and cheddar spreads, smoked salmon and mussels) from the Grindstone Neck Smokehouse, which is just up the road from Fisherman's Inn and owned by the same family. For things to do you can't beat the Schoodic Peninsula! We have our favorite spot in the rocks to watch the surf; it is a place that calls us back! We loved the condo's proximity to town and took walks up the Main street; we also sat on the benches overlooking the harbor and watched the tide come in. There are a number of galleries, antique shops, and other shops to knock around. We absolutely love the 5 & 10; it is the perfect spot to spend time on a rainy day! There is a 9 hole golf course nearby, Grindstone Neck. It was quite sloppy due to the recent rains and rocky ledge, but there is a charm about it with its wild blueberry bushes and picturesque holes by the water. I just wish it were better maintained. A final word about the owner: he was extremely helpful in answering our questions. When I asked, he could not recall if there was an iron and ironing board in the condo (there was), but told me if they were not there, to let him know and he would get them for me. All in all, a wonderful and memorable time away!"

  • Comforts of home and a welcoming community

"Our family of four adults and one 5-year-old stayed at Cook's Cottage over Labor Day weekend this year and loved the beautifully decorated, home-like space and amenities. The new sitting/sun room and deck offering views of both the sea and the bay are indeed very nice for the enjoyment of morning coffee and afternoon cocktails. The communities of the Schoodic area are welcoming, offering a more genuine 'downeast' experience than busy Bar Harbor, and the Schoodic Peninsula is well worth visiting, if you're at all enamored of the many personalities of the sea. We took the owners' recommendations for day excursions and were not disappointed! We enjoyed the relative privacy of the location yet got our fill of the Acadia area -- a great first trip to Maine. Why four stars? The stairs for access to three of the five bedrooms, which should be obvious by design but are worth noting. One flight is original to the architecture and very steep, and both would be a consideration for families with toddlers or older guests."
