  • Very clean charming waterfront home that fit our family well. Pet Friendly too!

"We loved all the room to spread out and the large yard for our dog to be able to run and get some exercise too! The house is very clean and well stocked. We found everything we needed. There are two bedrooms upstairs and one bath. Downstairs is another bath, mud room, laundry room, living room/dining and a den. The furniture is comfortable and everything makes you feel right at home in "Maine". The only reason this didn't get a perfect 5 star rating from us was because of the closeness to the slightly busy street and the noise you hear very early in the AM from the lobster boats/fisherman. This is of no fault of the house or owner - and may not bother many. But, for us as light sleepers we had a few rough spots in our sleep. The views from the dining room and deck are amazing - we had a couple gorgeous sunsets similar the picture posted above. We brought high end kayaks and felt ok about leaving them beside the garage. It was great to load the kayak right into the harbor at the edge of the lawn- very convenient. We kayaked once at Echo lake but, mostly just paddled throughout the harbor and explored a little island. There a few restaurants down the street in 'town' and if you cross the harbor you find Thurstons- this place proved to be WAY too busy for us as many were lined up outside - not a good choice if you have a child... Southwest harbor a quick 10 min drive away has many more restaurants. We brought our dog along and he loved laying on the deck - there was a handy hose near the deck which was useful to wash the dog after a swim or a walk along the shore. Do be prepared for bugs - we used bug spray almost every night and I brought a citronella candle which we used as well. The shore is tidal and you can walk out quite a distance - we walked the shore daily and found many "treasures". My son became addicted to finding "sea glass" - I had to explain that the broken fresh glass is just trash and to look for only the frosted kind... let's just say we had a lot of "extra" LOL - but, my one of favorite things to do since being a child and visiting my grandparents in Searsport... If you want to explore Acadia and the Down East - but don't want the hussle bussle of Bar Harbor then this would be a good option for you. We prefer quite nights and peaceful surroundings. Paul, the owner is very accommodating and very quick with any questions/concerns you may have. Thank you for sharing your vacation home with us!"

  • Winter Getaway

"We headed north from Boston after a crazy holiday season and stayed at this lovely farmhouse cottage on Deer Isle. We didn't know what to expect off season, but as we drove over the DI Bridge, and then over the very picturesque causeway that leads to the island, we were already charmed. The farm house exceeded our expectations; well appointed, tasteful and full of country charm. The surrounding pastures and next door conservation lands were beautiful. From the cottage, the winter views of the ocean were spectacular. We cozied up to the wood stove read books and made our favorite meals in the well stocked kitchen. Though the weather was nippy, each day we headed out on a Nature Heritage Trust walk through the woods, or along the ocean front. Beautiful views everywhere. We celebrated New Year Eve at a wonderful restaurant - the Arbor View Inn. This is reported to be one of the best restaurants in the entire state of Maine, and we'd heartily agree. If you want a true Down East experiences this family cottage is the perfect place to spend a week - or maybe two or three?"

  • Peaceful beauty

"We stayed in August with our 3 year old daughter and had a wonderful vacation. Our daughter could have spent the entire week happily picking the berries on the property. The house is secluded and private, but conveniently located. We walked to town and the farmers' market, and made short drives to Sand Beach, Red Barn Farm, and the wonderful trails throughout the island maintained by Island Heritage Trust. Our daughter loved the model of the quarry operations at the Granite Museum, and we enjoyed cooking in the Forge's kitchen as well as eating out in town. Wilda is a wonderful caretaker of the property. She has great information about Stonington and the island, and she generously gifted us with fresh vegetables from her garden. We will stay at the forge again the next time we visit Maine!"

  • Clean & comfortable

"Our family stayed here during our 1st trip to Maine. The house was very clean and nicely decorated. The beds were all comfortable and the kitchen had pretty much everything you needed if you decided to cook while there. It was nice to have a comfortable, quiet place to go to at the end of the day after being busy exploring all of MDI during the day. There were some great restaurants in town and all the major attractions are within 1/2 hour away."
