From its founding as a trading post in 1633, the town of Machias has a unique history as the site of the first naval battle of the American Revolution. Machias is the home of the blueberry and it is celebrated annually with its own festival. It is known for its beautiful beaches, historic sites dating from the very beginning of America, and great hiking, golfing, hunting, skiing and snowmobiling. While visiting Down East Maine cabins, vacationers should visit the art gallery housed in the University of Maine.

The coastal town of Bar Harbor is home to the famous Maine lobster. The town attracts visitors year-round for its historic charm and Native American history. Gouldsboro, Maine is the gateway to Acadia National Park’s Schoodic Peninsula, the only part of the park on the mainland. The 440-foot top of the Peninsula has wonderful views of Frenchman Bay and the southern tip is the place to watch the surf pound against the granite cliffs. The surrounding villages of Birch Harbor, Corea, Grindstone Neck, Prospect Harbor and Winter Harbor provide visitors with a delightful array of shops, galleries, museums, and a great choice of restaurants.
