  • best vacation ever!

"This was my Downeast dream vacation! I've been coming to this area since I was a kid, but had never stayed right on the ocean before. Tom and Cathy's house was the perfect place -- beautiful and comfortable, well appointed with all the amentities I could ask for (nice dishwasher and clothes washer and dryer), very clean and well-maintained; and most important of all, it's in a gorgeous, peaceful location with a great view. I felt so at home in this lovingly restored farmhouse, smelling the sea air and the sweetgrass; watching the birds from the screened-in front porch in the early morning with my coffee. The location is great for day trips as well; Eastport, Machias, Quoddy Head, The Reversing Falls right down the road...I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who loves nature and wants to get off the beaten path. Thanks Tom and Cathy!"

  • Terrific Spot for Quiet Vacation with Superb View

"We wanted a quiet place close to the water that was near favorite hiking places (Great Wass Is., Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge, Bold Coast & Campobello Is.) and this was it! We spent a wonderful week with wonderful weather, breakfast on the deck in the warming sun every morning, watching eider ducks and an occasional loon floating and diving near shore, walks on Sandy River Beach & out to Bar Island. The cottage is very well equipped (kitchen had everything I needed to make most of our meals there). Though there are cottages close by on either side, they are screened by a hedge of trees and bushes so we had plenty of privacy. And the view of the sunrise is spectacular, not to mention the view at all times. This place exceeded our expectations and we highly recommend it."

  • Wonderful rental, all necessities of home provided

"This home near the East Machias River is one of the best rentals we have ever stayed at in the last thirty years. We hope to return in two years for another two - four week stay. It is centrally located for trips north to Canada and south to Bar Harbor. Machias has a great festival in August. Lobster is available from the lobster pounds and from fishermen; the Hartnett's even cook the lobster for you. The house is stocked with everything you need for a comfortable vacation. The landlords are gracious and helpful. The flowers are more than beautiful around the property."

  • Outstanding Again!

"We recently had the pleasure of staying at Somerled for our second visit. We absolutely loved it the first time, and I was wondering if maybe we were going to be disappointed this time. To say that someplace is even better the second time around definitely describes this wonderful, unique home. Since we knew what the area has to offer ahead of time, this made our stay even more relaxing and enjoyable. Words cannot completely describe what you will experience here. If you are searching for someplace peaceful, quiet, and full of nature, this is your answer. The home is located where you will not hear any cars, and the only people you will see are the lobstermen as they pull and set their traps. Seals played in front of the house everyday we were there too! Complete relaxation! As I mentioned in my earlier review, the worst part is having to leave. The long trip we made from Indiana to Somerled is so well worthwhile. We hope to return again in the future, but hope to stay longer next time. The hosts of this home are absolutely wonderful! We WILL return! Thank you for sharing your amazing home!"
