The main airport is Bangor International Airport and the main road into the region is Interstate 95. Other main roads to explore the area are Routes 15 and 9 and the rural areas are also easily accessible. Visitors can follow Route 201, known as the Old Canada Road Byway. This road follows an old Abenaki tribe trading path. Following this road will take visitors to the Canadian border.

Page Farm and Museum has a great collection tracing farming technology, an old school house from the 1800s and a restored traditionally built barn.

Of course, the major attraction in this region is the vast outdoor space within easy reach of Maine Highlands cottages. Baxter State Park, with over 200 miles of trails, is an ideal place to go hiking, biking, horseback riding, rock climbing and more. Within Katahdin Iron Works Forest, visitors will find Gulf Hagas. This national natural landmark is part of the Appalachian Trail; it is some 400 feet deep and over three miles long. The trek provides welcome respite from the trail with waterfalls and swimming holes for taking a break to cool off. Surrounded by forest, Moosehead Lake is not just a great place to spot moose; it is also perfect for sports. Visitors here enjoy kayaking, canoeing, fishing and whitewater rafting. The surrounding area is ideal for biking and hiking in summer and a variety of snow sports in winter. Then there is Mount Katahdin, where the sporting action continues with hiking and biking trails within the spectacular scenery.
