"Everything was perfect when we arrived, including replacement of down pillows and comforter to accommodate a severe feather allergy. As frequent guests to Spruce Point inn in the past we know the Booth Bay Harbor area very well and have always said "someday we will stay at Retreat Cottage" but since we could never plan far ahead it was always booked. This year we are moving to the West Coast so this was our last Maine vacation - we never dreamed the cottage would be available but it was.
The cottage is small - perfect for two adults and is so peaceful. We started and ended each day sitting in the chairs out front - coffee in the morning; wine in the evening. The kitchen is small but thanks to our manager, Sue we learned of Eventide and were able to pick up some very nice cheeses, meats and breads for anti pasto We also stopped at the York Farmer's market on the way up and got some meats and veggies. It was easy to whip up a gourmet meal a couple of days - and the others we headed to Muscongus Bay Trading Company in Round Pond which is a long time favorte.
Having a chance for an evening sail on our last night made the entire trip perfect.
Thank you Susan for helping to make this happen and to our host John Druce who elected to keep the Retreat Cottage and maje u available for special memories."

"We stayed at this house last week with my parents and siblings and their families. It was a perfect home to accommodate our large group, not only because of the adequate number of bedrooms and bathrooms, but also because of the exceptionally large amount of "common room" space and the huge round dining room table that allowed all 11 of us to enjoy meals together. The home is beautifully decorated, lots of attention to detail, but also feels homey. The kitchen has absolutely everything needed. Having all linens and beach towels included is unusual in my experience, but made packing much easier, as did having a washer and dryer in the house. But really, even if the house wasn't as lovely, a visit would be worth it for the view from the deck and screened in porch overlooking the ocean. From coffee first thing in the morning, to a glass of wine as the moon reflected on water, it just couldn't have been more beautiful. We also enjoyed watching lobstermen/women pull in their traps right from our deck. Southport Island is a favorite vacation destination for our family, and this house was the perfect place to stay while there."

"As someone who only rents houses that have a lot of reviews, I assume the reason this house doesn't have even more of them is because people don't want the secret to get out. It's a beautifully-decorated home with gorgeous views from the large patio and huge master bedroom. The other two bedrooms can still hear the waves well with their windows open. It's quiet and private (and has comfortable furniture in the art-filled living room), but close to Boothbay Harbor where you can catch all kinds of sightseeing boats. It's also near Ocean Point, which is stunning, and the East Boothbay General Store, which you'll find yourself going to repeatedly because the food (breakfast, lunch, or gourmet pizza for dinner) is actually great. Can't recommend it enough."

A Great Family VacationThat Has Something for Everybody
"My family members range in age from 6 to 65. The last night of our vacation we all sat around the lovely dining table overlooking Alden's beautiful yard. Each of us told what we liked most about the trip. The two 6-year olds (one boy, one girl) liked catching crabs and snails off of Alden's dock.....and playing croquet at the Burnt Island Lighthouse. My granddaughter also liked picking blueberries (her favorite) from Alden's garden. My 15 year old granddaughter loved climbing the rocks at Ocean Point. One 10 year old grandson loved playing hide and seek in Alden's yard, the other the Whale Watch. One of my sons loved kayaking the best, the other liked fishing. My daughter-in-law loved the fact that the quaint town was within walking distance of the house (as we all did). I loved it all, but particularly enjoyed rising early to enjoy the peace and quiet of the charming house and gaze out the window. One morning I even saw an eagle! After initially greeting us and sharing some very interesting history about the place, Alden and Karen left us alone. My family and I always felt "at home" there."
