  • lovely property + responsive owners = amazing week

"When I first started researching a Maine vacation property to rent for a week I focused on traditional coastal cottages. What I found was that most of properties were, well--a bit too rustic for my tastes or the cost too high. When I came across River Watch it immediately caught my attention. Although it was a more modern cottage, it met all of our other wants and needs. I sent an email with a few questions to the owners, Kathryn and Joe, and it was promptly answered with warmth and friendliness. In fact, Kathryn was truly a pleasure to deal with throughout the entire rental process. When we arrived at the cottage and opened the door to that incredible view--wow! It was heaven. Simply put, you have 180-degrees of peaceful water views. The deck with the Adirondack recliners as well as the chairs next to the water enabled us to enjoy six beautiful sunsets. The main cottage (and small guest house, which our college-age son used) had all the amenities imaginable; it was obvious that Kathryn and Joe put much thought into the needs and comfort of their renters. The den area (with that incredible view) had comfortable furniture, flat-screen TV, DVR, stereo system and a supply of DVD movies to peruse on rainy days (of which we had only one!) There was no cable/satellite TV, but there was high-speed internet and wifi and honestly, we did not miss watching TV shows one bit! The kitchen was fully stocked with everything you would need to cook dinner using the fresh ingredients you could buy at the local markets and farm stands. There was even a charcoal grill in the shed that we used twice. The large bathroom had a full supply of bath and beach towels and under the sink was sun block and mosquito repellant. The bathroom in the guesthouse was similarily supplied. There was a full-size washer and dryer in the garage, as well as laundry detergent, spot remover spray and dryer sheets. The living area with the fireplace at the front of the house was not used by us very much, since it was pleasantly warm while we were there. But I can imagine a toasty fire would be nice to sit around when there's more of a chill in the evening air. The bedrooms were of a decent size with small closets that easily held a week's worth of clothes. The property was fairly close to several charming villages and Rockland for any major supplies. It was difficult to leave this beautiful place but we hope to come back someday! Hint--take the ferry from Port Clyde to Monhegan Island."

  • Cozy Cottage within Walking Distance of the Town

"The owner greeted us with late arrival and we were very impressed with the accommodation. It is located up on the hill overlooking the harbor. Even though we went to watch the 4th of July fireworks and were rained out it was a fabulous place to stay. We wished there were two queen beds instead of the one but made it work and it would be nice if the toilet paper was better than 1-ply, but these are minor things in the grand scheme of it all. We would definitely stay here again in the future!"

  • A magical place!

"The pictures do not do justice to this lovely, lovely vacation home that sits across the street from the bay and has water rights. It is spacious, beautifully decorated with original art, and very private. There are two beautiful outdoor spaces -- a deck off the dining room (with a 4-burner gas grill) and a patio that is set in the middle of an English-style cottage garden. The kitchen is fully equipped for making meals at home. Our family had an amazing time recharging from our city living, and the house's proximity to Acadia (1.5 hours north) and Camden Hills State Park (20 minutes south) made that very easy. Belfast, the nearest town, has not been overrun by tourism (although there are plenty of quaint shops to purchase Maine souvenirs and a Hannafords nearby for staples and groceries). As an added bonus, the house is not too far from mid-coast attractions (Camden, Rockport, Rockland). The owners made sure that they were available for any questions we may have had, but they were never intrusive. Two things: the master suite is open to a sitting room below (but still offers plenty of privacy) and broadband is limited, so if you're a family that needs to plug in, be prepared to use your cell services."

  • Fantastic

"This cottage is clean as a whistle, with everything and more that you will need to relax and enjoy the Boothbay area. The furnishings were clean and comfortable and the home surprisingly roomy. We were able to hear the gulls and fog horns! It is just far enough outside of the noise of downtown Boothbay and yet very close. Great place to stay!!!"
