"When I first started researching a Maine vacation property to rent for a week I focused on traditional coastal cottages. What I found was that most of properties were, well--a bit too rustic for my tastes or the cost too high. When I came across River Watch it immediately caught my attention. Although it was a more modern cottage, it met all of our other wants and needs. I sent an email with a few questions to the owners, Kathryn and Joe, and it was promptly answered with warmth and friendliness. In fact, Kathryn was truly a pleasure to deal with throughout the entire rental process.
When we arrived at the cottage and opened the door to that incredible view--wow! It was heaven. Simply put, you have 180-degrees of peaceful water views. The deck with the Adirondack recliners as well as the chairs next to the water enabled us to enjoy six beautiful sunsets. The main cottage (and small guest house, which our college-age son used) had all the amenities imaginable; it was obvious that Kathryn and Joe put much thought into the needs and comfort of their renters. The den area (with that incredible view) had comfortable furniture, flat-screen TV, DVR, stereo system and a supply of DVD movies to peruse on rainy days (of which we had only one!) There was no cable/satellite TV, but there was high-speed internet and wifi and honestly, we did not miss watching TV shows one bit! The kitchen was fully stocked with everything you would need to cook dinner using the fresh ingredients you could buy at the local markets and farm stands. There was even a charcoal grill in the shed that we used twice. The large bathroom had a full supply of bath and beach towels and under the sink was sun block and mosquito repellant. The bathroom in the guesthouse was similarily supplied. There was a full-size washer and dryer in the garage, as well as laundry detergent, spot remover spray and dryer sheets. The living area with the fireplace at the front of the house was not used by us very much, since it was pleasantly warm while we were there. But I can imagine a toasty fire would be nice to sit around when there's more of a chill in the evening air. The bedrooms were of a decent size with small closets that easily held a week's worth of clothes. The property was fairly close to several charming villages and Rockland for any major supplies.
It was difficult to leave this beautiful place but we hope to come back someday!
Hint--take the ferry from Port Clyde to Monhegan Island."

"We were awestruck with this place! Beautifully decorated with so many special touches that you just felt the warmth of love and family in every room. Very comfortable for us- 6 adults and 2 toddlers. Plenty of room, the home didn't lack for a thing, and it's so spacious and well-constructed with exposed beams, nice windows, big kitchen, dining room, nice bathrooms, sitting rooms, and the grounds are perfect for families with the swings, hammock, and sitting areas---all overlooking the cove. We felt like the luckiest people in the world to find this place!"

"We were so impressed with this vacation rental. This was our first visit to Maine and we felt right at home immediately upon arrival. The house was well appointed, spotless and amenities were numerous, from the well-stocked spice drawer, the pantry with every piece of cookware you might need, the pancake recipes on the inside of the cabinet, to the game shelves (there's even a playroom on the lower level with lots of toys,) hand soap, toilet paper and kleenex in every bathroom, along with dish soap, dishwasher soap and laundry detergent and fabric softener. The home is spacious and has wonderful views of the Sheepscot River from the deck and the house. There's even a canoe to take out on the river along with the requisite lifevests. The house has been lovingly taken care of. This was a nice mid-point for all the places we wanted to visit along the coast-it was the perfect place to unwind and relax after our days of sightseeing.
Wiscasset is a very picturesque town and Red's Eats was our first stop of the week for Maine Lobster-their Lobster Roll was excellent, but make sure you come very hungry-it is huge! Other notable places to eat and visit: the Sea Salt Cafe in Damariscotta for breakfast, the Clam Shack in Kennebunkport, Jordan Pond House in Acadia National Park(Excellent food, especially the popovers and strawberry jam-reservations are recommended) Pemaquid Point Lighthouse(gorgeous scenery) Ben and Bill's in Bar Harbor for ice cream(they even have lobster ice cream!), the Camden Deli has some yummy blueberry pie. We also went to a clambake on Cabbage Island-it was one of the highlights of our trip and a wonderful way to end the week -you will not leave there hungry! We visited Freeport and shopped at L.L. Bean and checked out Boothbay Harbor. The owner provided some excellent suggestions for places to eat and visit, too-all in all, a memorable vacation!"
