  • What a special retreat!

"Our family had an amazing week at Merrill House. We found the house incredibly inviting and quite spacious for our group. We enjoyed cooking amazing meals in the old kitchen and savoring them in the Dining Hall, which seated all of us. Our evenings were spent in the Great Hall, with games, puzzles and dancing. The children had an amazing time in the swimming pond, particularly jumping in from the rope swing. We bought kites and spent a wonderful afternoon flying kites. The grounds allowed us to set up various games, such as a volleyball/badminton net and relay races. One of us is a painter who found numerous spots to set up and spend the afternoon painting. The drive to nearby parks for hikes were worth the trip, but we certainly enjoyed 'staying home' relaxing at the Merrill House's porch. It was an absolutely wonderful experience for all. Thank you!"

  • Perfect for a relaxing Maine vacation!

"We loved the camp and really loved how close it was to town. You don't have to drive forever down bad dirt roads to get there. The pictures don't even do it justice. It is larger and more spacious than it appears in pictures. It is well stocked with games, kitchen essentials, a hair dryer, etc. Everything is neatly organized. There is plenty of space for 2 families and the place has everything you could need! The owners were super nice and helpful. It was pretty clean, I guess if you are looking for the Waldorf, this might not be your spot, but we loved it and would return again in a minute. With that being said, there were only a couple minor inconveniences… The very first Sunday morning we were there I got up before anyone else and imagined a peaceful morning enjoying my coffee on the deck while listening to the loons. At 0730 on Sunday morning, the neighbor started up his astro powered riding lawn mower and began mowing the lawn. Who does that on Sunday morning at 0730?? A holiday weekend, even. It was loud and wicked obnoxious. It reminded me of a something you would see in a Chevy Chase movie. However, not the owners fault. The microwave broke on our third day and we called the owner who promptly sent a repairman. It could not be fixed so we were without a microwave for the rest of the week. The only other little unpleasant thing was 3 or 4 fresh mounds of dog turd on the lawn. We cleaned it up and never looked back. It's honestly a gem. We had a great week and overall would recommend it in a heartbeat!"

  • Dad with 2 boys, 4 wheeling and bird hunting Oct 2014

"We have been going to the Eustis area for years and am so thankful that we found this home to stay in. In the past, we have stayed at the Spill Over Motel, which was great. But there is no comparison to having your own kitchen and much more room then a motel. The place is very charming and cozy, we really loved it. My 10 year set up his wild life camera and we have video of deer in the back yard which came out around 10:00 PM. We liked it that we were on a private dirt road, away from the main road, but there were a few neighbors in sight just in case you needed something, which we didn't. The lot is nice and private. I liked the location, since I didn't want to be way out in the woods. The place is spotless; the shower is roomy with plenty of hot water. There is a 'bear' theme throughout, which my kids loved. We fished for just a few hours in Flagstaff lake and used the pier at "Pines Market" which is an easy 5 miles north of the property. My sons caught some good sized togue type fish. You can find most anything you need there at that Pines Market. We did not 4 wheel from the property as we were not familiar with trails from that location; instead we headed to the Jim Pond area, which we knew better. If I were to ski Sugarloaf, I would definitely stay here, as it is, as reported, 6.8 miles from the entrance, which translates into just 6-7 minutes as the road is very good. We saw deer at the end of the road during the early AM hours. We were provided with a crock pot & coffee maker and assorted nice dishes and other cook ware as well as a gas grill, which worked great. There is a restaurant right at the entrance to the camp's road "Choplin House"?, but we did not get to try it. It looked like there was a nice pub in there too. It would be walking distance if the weather was favorable, maybe it is 3/10ths of a mile away. For good pizza and sandwiches head north for about a mile and look for the gas station on the left that looks like they would sell other things besides gas. The camp has wood wide pine floors, tongue and grove pine walls and ceilings and looks really good. During warmer weather there is a cute porch with a little TV. I would highly recommend staying here except if you want to stay the dates I want to go next October, and then please stay at the Spill Over :-). You won’t know what you are missing so we will both be happy. I have rented about 6- 8 times through VRBO and have always had great experiences, like w/ this one."
