  • Quiet getaway for two

"If you're looking for the real Maine, the Maine that's not the T-shirt-and-trickets tourist atmosphere of Camden, Boothbay, and Bar Harbor, the Maine of friendly people, fresh-off-the-boat seafood, bracing hikes, gorgeous scenery, quiet waterfront mornings and evenings, go to Harpswell. And if you are two, stay in this cozy cottage on Quahog Cove off Harpswell Island Road. Within driving distance to all the ordinary sites -- we had lattes in Camden, bought art in Brunswick, visited the Wyeth collection in Rockland, toured Boothbay's old neighborhoods -- "Cozy" is perfect for an intimate week for two. The cottage is well appointed: the bed is comfortable, the little porch is perfect for a 5:00 wine (or two), the bathroom is more than we expected for so small a cottage, the dock is inviting, and sunrise over the cove was worth the price in itself. Even in mid-October, the cottage was toasty and comfy. Additional and unexpected: a French press coffee maker, a huge closet, a huge shower, a fully furnished kitchen, and lobstermen who work their traps practically in your front yard every morning. And John and Karen had fresh flowers awaiting us. The cottage was spotless and well maintained. After two days, it felt like home. A delightful week away."

  • Amazing view with great accomidations

"I stayed here for originally 4 nights, but extended my stay a night and I absolutely loved it. It had everything I needed for a get away with my dog. The owners were so nice and helpful and give me pointers for everything from a dog friendly beach to the best restaurants. I loved that my dogs size did not matter (German Shepherd) and it had a private little yard with a hammock. The pull out couch into a bed was so comfortable, it never felt like a pull out couch. The pictures do not do the view justice, it was spectacular! I would love to stay here again and recommend it to anyone."

  • Good!!

"Beautiful old fashion home! The bathroom upstairs is the most amazing bathroom I have ever seen... It was nice and clean. I was not aware it was a personal home. But still gorgeous"

  • The overwhelming beauty of Orr's Island is captured here!

"Our family cannot thank Peter enough for providing us the perfect setting for an adult family vacation--the first time all of our kids were together in Maine (including spouses and significant others) since 1993. Having traveled from MO, PA and CA, it was worth every mile of travel to this incredible destination. Our anticipation built as we took the winding gravel road down to the end of the Lane, where we found our destination, exactly as described and pictured. Actually, pictures cannot capture the inside character, water views, beautiful gardens/lawn area and the soothing sounds of the ocean. Inside are artifacts, pictures, shelves of books and albums from three generation of family and furniture suited to the period and setting of the home--all of this adds to the magical nature of the location. The views from the living and dining rooms, and bedrooms that face the water are breathtaking. The kitchen, larder, and pantry were well equipped including the large pots that made our lobster cooking easy--especially when we had to fetch the sea water for "the only correct method" by which to boil the lobsters :) The substantial "lobster plates" made serving and eating them a real treat. The griddle accessory for the gas stove was perfect for toasting lobster rolls the next day along with enjoying toasted Anadama bread for breakfast Coffee every morning on the porch was the routine for most all. (The sun rises to the "left" of and moves parallel to the front porch) Whether watching the cormorants, gulls, and songbirds, the lobstermen pulling traps within 100 yards of the shore, or just watching the tides move were relaxing routines that started every day off right. The rocky coast and little rock/sand beach were perfect. We launched our kayaks from the beach (rented two others from H2Outfitters by the Cribstone Bridge--of course there is a single person touring kayak on the property that was used every day) and scoured the sand and rocks for sea glass--we found a lot! Go to Erica's in Harpswell for takeout--recommended by a buddy from Yarmouth who knows how and where to eat, well worth the trip. We also had casual family photos taken by a local Harpswell photographer and were thrilled with how he captured the essence of our family and the beauty of the coast!"

Portland & Casco Bay Travel Tips

Portland Vacation Rentals for a Year-Round Tourist Destination

As a year-round tourist location, it’s hard to beat Portland and Casco Bay in Maine. Portland vacation rentals are ideally placed for this culturally and historically rich area. Day and night, the bustling Portland harbor is buzzing with activity, with tourist boats coming and going, fishermen at work and restaurants filled with people. Choose a Casco Bay lodging choice near the harbor to be in the middle of the action. You will find a Maine lodging choice to suit any family or group of friends looking for a vacation in this scenic area.

Portland Vacation Rentals in the Largest of Maine’s Cities

Portland is the largest of Maine’s cities and it is the hub of its renowned art community. Thus, Portland vacation rentals are in one of the most sought-after locations in the region. Dating from the 1800s, the Old Port is now a high-class shopping area with a wide variety of restaurants around your Casco Bay lodging choice. The city takes its heritage seriously and buildings around your Maine lodging choice are maintained to an exceptionally high standard.

Casco Bay Lodging for Ferries and Hot Air Balloons

A benefit to Portland vacation rentals is their proximity to the ferries to Nova Scotia. It’s worth jumping a ferry to head off to Casco Bay’s Calendar Islands for a great day out. The adventurous traveler in a Casco Bay lodging choice might prefer to undertake a slightly more unusual mode of travel and opt for a hot air balloon trip as a novel way to see the region. Staying in Maine lodging, you will wonder how many times you will have to return before you’ve seen it all!

Maine Lodging For Culture for Kids

For the culturally minded, there are so many museums and so much history here that you will struggle to fit it all in within just one vacation. Portland vacation rentals cater for the culturally minded children too with their own museum. From Casco Bay lodging you will find an amazing variety of walks and excursions to be undertaken. While staying in a Maine lodging, there is also the chance to see the Portland Pirates play hockey or the Sea Dogs if baseball is your game.
