  • Quiet getaway for two

"If you're looking for the real Maine, the Maine that's not the T-shirt-and-trickets tourist atmosphere of Camden, Boothbay, and Bar Harbor, the Maine of friendly people, fresh-off-the-boat seafood, bracing hikes, gorgeous scenery, quiet waterfront mornings and evenings, go to Harpswell. And if you are two, stay in this cozy cottage on Quahog Cove off Harpswell Island Road. Within driving distance to all the ordinary sites -- we had lattes in Camden, bought art in Brunswick, visited the Wyeth collection in Rockland, toured Boothbay's old neighborhoods -- "Cozy" is perfect for an intimate week for two. The cottage is well appointed: the bed is comfortable, the little porch is perfect for a 5:00 wine (or two), the bathroom is more than we expected for so small a cottage, the dock is inviting, and sunrise over the cove was worth the price in itself. Even in mid-October, the cottage was toasty and comfy. Additional and unexpected: a French press coffee maker, a huge closet, a huge shower, a fully furnished kitchen, and lobstermen who work their traps practically in your front yard every morning. And John and Karen had fresh flowers awaiting us. The cottage was spotless and well maintained. After two days, it felt like home. A delightful week away."

  • Great getaway

"Enjoyed the privacy! Tucked away but allowing you quick access to being downtown in minutes. Great place for taking a stroll to either the beach to sit on the rocks or down a country road. We were there for a wedding with not a lot of down time, but did enjoy the location when time allowed."

  • Charming, Well-Located, Comfy

"My wife, our pets Eli and India and I stayed at the Sheacliff apartment on Orr's Island during the end of July, beginning of August, 2014. What a delightful, clean, beautifully appointed, comfy and well situated accommodation this is. It's just a few minutes walk to the picturesque Lowell's Cove, where we walked almost every morning, and a point of departure for touring the Maine coast along Orr's and Bailey islands, Harpswell and further afield to Freeport, Bath, Brunswisck and Damariscotta. Our hosts Shirley, Kevin and Mark made us feel at home. Do sound out Mark for his recommendations on where to eat locally on Orr's and Bailey islands, as well as farther afield. All of his recommendations were spot on for value, taste, and service. Two recommendations with particularly gorgeous views are the Dolphin Marina and Restaurant and Estes Lobster House with its lobster specials. And for some of the most inventive and delicious tavern fare we've ever had, drive over to Damariscotta and King Eider's Pub. We highly recommend Sheacliff and would happily pay a return visit whenever we stay on the mid Maine coast."

  • Magical Family Escape

"An absolutely perfect vacation destination! Our family rented this home in 2014 as a place to getaway and relax. We woke up every morning to a beautiful sunrise over the water and a new kayak adventure awaiting. With numerous islands and inlets to explore by boat or kayak, our nautical thirst was quenched while our hunger was fulfilled with a quick boat ride or kayak trip to the docks for fresh lobster. Days finished off with a serene sunset and a fire in the fireplace. And, at some point in every day, we took advantage of the outdoor shower where we enjoyed hot water, hot coffee and Baileys and an unforgettable view of the bay. All of our children (2, 9, 12) still talk about the exploring, puzzle doing, climbing in the tree house, and, of course, the gorgeous water. We all are looking forward to returning to this magical place for many more years to come."
