"My wife and I stayed a week in August at the "Small Cottage". First let me say it is a very small cottage and it is a true Cape Cod summer cottage. If you know what to expect you will be not be surprised, it is not the Four Seasons! Having said that we loved the rustic cottage and the reason for staying there is right out the window. It is as perfect of a location as possible if you love the ocean. A private beach, on the Shining sea bike path and great views of Martha's Vineyard! We rode the bike path everyday, it is about a 5 minute ride into Woods Hole where you can find bars, stores, restaurants and the ferry to the Vineyard. It is a great location for a couple or two or a small family. Just to sit on the lawn during the late afternoon and watch the boats made every stress you may have had melt away! If you love the ocean and beach this location cannot be beat! It is very quiet and private. We have already booked for next year we loved it so much! I would have given the cottage 5 stars but it is a little worn inside, but maybe that's the charm of it!!! Although we did not have to use it the larger bedroom has A/C which would be great if needed. The outdoor shower was awesome! Overall a picture perfect vacation stay!!!"

We spent a week there it's a perfect location for both bay side and ocean side beaches. House was clean, well stocked and maintained. The owner was accessible and great to work with !! Have been going to the Cape for many years and it is the perfect location. Would highly recommend this rental and we will be back next year!"

  • Romantic Vacation for 2

"We just came back from a relaxing vacation on the Cape. The Garret offered a comfortable homebase for my husband and I for our week in Wellfleet. We were able to use the kitchen for our breakfast and lunch and walk to the Wellfleet restaurants for dinner. (we like Mac's). The space in the Garret is exactly as described with antique charm and slanted ceilings. My husband is 5'11" and didn't have any issues with the ceiling height. We slept with the windows open and had a cool Cape Cod cross breeze. On the hottest days the AC was very efficient. Wifi is fast and we watched a movie on the flat screen/DVD on a rainy night. Our hostess Brenda was so lovely and got us acquainted with the space and left us to our vacation. There is a steep set of steps to walk up/down but was not an obstacle for me even at 7 months pregnant. We would defiantely return to the Garret next summer if we could fit the baby and his accessories but we'll have to see what next summer brings. We highly recommend staying here as a romantic 2 person space with the conveniences of the town."

  • Great Weekend!

"We had a group of 12 stay here for a golf weekend and I am so glad we chose this house. Upon arrival you realize that the pictures do not do this beautiful home justice. The place was spotless. The open floor plan is perfect for entertaining a large group as everyone can congregate in the kitchen / family room area as well as on the massive deck, which happens to overlook the lake. As many have mentioned already, the secluded location is great because you really do not have to worry about bothering anyone. With that said, do not mistake “secluded” for isolated. You are only 5-10 minutes from downtown Hyannis. Mark, the owner, was overly accommodating and just very easy to deal with. It was a great weekend and I look forward to reserving it again next year."

Cape Cod Travel Tips

When locals talk about Cape Cod, it often sounds like a Dr. Seuss book: Lower cape, upper cape, outer cape, inner cape. While it’s true that each part of the cape has its own unique characteristics, the most important thing to know as a visitor is that Cape Cod offers the freshest seafood and the most perfect, natural escape from the hustle and bustle.

Top Attractions

The biggest draw in Cape Cod is the relaxed lifestyle buttressed by a deep connection with nature.

The Cape Cod National Seashore makes up about 40 miles of seashore on the outer cape - all the way from Provincetown on the upper cape to Chatham on the lower. It includes 68 square miles of woods, lakes, ponds and beaches. Cahoon Hollow Beach in Wellfleet on the Atlantic side is simply beautiful. Come here to relax and grab a drink and some fresh clams at the Beachcomber bar. Marconi Beach, also in Wellfleet, features more crowds but stunning sunsets. Head to the beach at Chatham on the lower cape to tour the quaint Chatham Lighthouse. There are also plenty of bayside beaches in Truro and Provincetown.

As it is situated in a unique coastal and bay ecosystem, Cape Cod has several important wildlife sanctuaries that are great for an educational visit. Schedule in a visit to Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, the Wellfleet Audubon Sanctuary or Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge in Chatham to learn about the local ecosystem and protection efforts.

What To Do

If you’re on the upper cape, check out the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum for a dose of interesting history. On the inner cape catch a film at the old-timey Wellfleet Drive-In Theatre and grab some ice cream to go with at the nearby Wellfleet Dairy Bar and Grill. Wine-lovers won’t want to miss a visit to the fabulous 5-acre Truro Vineyards where you can sample Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to go where presidents in the past have been, pay a visit to the John F. Kennedy Memorial in Hyannis and then head to Falmouth to take a ride on The Island Queen Ferry to Martha’s Vineyard - a favorite island of presidents through the ages.

Dining and Shopping

It goes without saying that they know how to do seafood right on the cape. If you’re on the upper cape, eat at the The Lobster Pot, a landmark seafood shack in Provincetown, which serves up no-nonsense deliciousness. You’ll have great views of MacMillan Wharf and can delight in the classics like steamed littlenecks, lobster rolls and clam chowder. A more upscale P-town eatery with a stunning view is Fanizzi’s By the Sea, which serves up classics with an Italian twist.

If you’re on the lower or mid cape, delicious meals can be had at Blackfish in Truro, the Chatham Pier Fish Market (where you can also do some seal watching), Arnold’s Lobster and Clam Bar in Eastham and the delightfully named The Wicked Oyster in Wellfleet.

The hands-down best place for shopping on the Cape is Commercial Street in Provincetown. You can find everything here from upscale boutiques, shops selling artisanal crafts and more funky options like Marine Specialties, Inc. a kooky surplus store, or The Shell Shop, which sells tens of thousands of unique shells.

Bring your swimsuit, sunscreen and appetite in preparation for the perfect Cape Cod vacation.
