"This property is great for a Martha's Vineyard vacation. The pool + 3 hot water outdoor showers are wonderful, the hammock a bonus, and the tennis court is in great shape. We had raucous ping pong tournaments in the "barn," and the grounds couldn't be more beautiful. The feeling is serene, tasteful. Away from summer traffic madness of Vineyard Haven and Edgartown. Your Chilmark lease allows access to Lucy Vincent beach - our favorite so far on the island. Sheila, the property manager, is super accessible, very helpful, friendly. And we had easy access to two great nearby restaurants: State Road and Beach Plum Inn. You are also close to nice hiking at Prospect Hill (where President Obama waved to us from the car taking him out the dirt driveway from his rental to....golf? In fact, make sure to get the land trustee map of hiking trails island wide; there are other good ones). All of this makes up for the non-ocean view, which I had some hesitation about before I got there. It was so pleasant being there that I didn't mind the lack of ocean view from the house. Can't have everything... Besides, there is a sweet public beach walking distance away called Brickyards, a hidden, uncrowded gem, down a nearby dirt road leading to a walking path...about a half or 3/4 mile walk.
Wrt activities, I enjoyed biking around MV, but the rental road bike I got was in terrible shape. Island rentals are used to recreational riders - so make sure to specify you want a performance bike. You will want a rental car if you don't bring your own car - but island rates are high, and summer car ferry availability is almost impossible w/o way advance booking. Ck out kayak rentals on Long Pond
A few warnings: 1) One bedroom has twin beds; the other 3 have full size beds. Sleeps 8, but 6 need to be prepared to share full beds. I had guests for whom that was an issue. However, upon request the owner instantly provided comfortable air mattresses. And the fun part of it was that one of our kids "got to" sleep in the barn! 2) This place is right by the two lane road along the north side of MV. There is some - not a lot - of traffic. It didn't bother any of us, and we are a noise sensitive lot. 3) The 3 upstairs bedrooms each have AC, but two of them have no screens and no way to open windows around the AC units. I don't like AC, so was frustrated not being able to get fresh air w/ bug protection @ night.
Despite these small issues, I highly recommend this rental."
