Rockport is located an hour’s drive from Boston. Most people travel by road so they have their own vehicle in which to explore the destination once there. If traveling from other parts of North America, your nearest airport is Boston Logan International Airport. From there, you can hire a car and drive the short distance to Rockport.

Rockport’s beaches are some of its greatest attractions. The main beach is closest to town and a combination of sand and pebbles. It is known as Back Beach and has spectacular views. Long Beach is a small protected alcove with lovely sands. If you are looking for a quiet beach spot, then head to either Cape Hedge Beach or Old Garden Beach. Both of these beaches are generally quiet and offer solitude where you can simply sit back and enjoy the ocean views. If you enjoy walking then visit Pebble Beach on the south side of town. As the name implies, it is made up of many thousands of small smooth stones.

There are several historic landmark lighthouses along the coast near Rockport. You can get a map and information from the local information center and meander from one to the next. The Straightsmouth Island Lighthouse dates back to 1835 and marks the entrance to Rockport Harbor. On the nearby Thatcher Island you can see the oldest remaining twin lighthouses. They have been serving as lighthouses since 1789.

If you enjoy nature and the outdoors, take a drive to the nearby Halibut Point State Park. Here, you can enjoy fantastic coastal views and watch the many marine birds playing in the thermals. It is a great place for walking and enjoying the outdoors. A great picnic venue is the Millbrook Meadow. There are benches and a play park area for the kids.

There are several charter companies based in Rockport that offer cruises on the Essex River for people who enjoy birdwatching. Ocean sailing charters offer late afternoon cruises from the harbor. Ocean fishing charters are also available for those that want to enjoy some sport fishing. A great way to explore the coast is to rent a kayak and paddle from beach to beach. From mid-April to June, you can join a whale watching excursion and watch the gentle giants of the sea frolic in the waves.

The Rockport Golf Club welcomes visitors who want to enjoy a round while on vacation. Tee-off times can be easily arranged by contacting the club house once you arrive in town.
