  • Cozy Island Cottage

"On a whim, and with a week of vacation, I decide to try West Island. It is a quiet and tranquil community and perfect for a low-key get-away. The cottage was centrally located so that I was steps from swimming in the ocean, a 5 minute bike ride from the beautiful and calm West Island beach, and a 2 minute ride to Earl's Marina, where I kept my boat, and where I also found some unique and entertaining nightlife. The cottage itself has everything you need and is wonderfully comfortable. My favorite place to hang out was on the side porch, where I could enjoy the pleasant ocean breeze. In the end, I did not give this rental 5 stars because during my week stay construction was going on next door, which detracted from the overall experience. However, I would definitely consider renting the same spot again. Give the Balsams at West Island a try. You won't be disappointed."

  • Used West Island as a "home base"

"We (family of 2) would rate Misty Bay property as "very good" (unfortunately, that choice wasn't available). We used Misty Bay as the home base to visit New Bedford, Fairhaven, Fall River, Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod (round trip to Provincetown), Falmouth/Woods Hole, Concord and Lexington, etc. All were easily accessible from Misty Bay. Very good restaurants in Fairhaven and New bedford, all within 15 minutes from Misty Bay. Regarding the house, it is located in an extremly quiet area. The view (of Buzzards Bay) from the bay window of the living area is excellent. The house is well furnished. On the "con" side, having only one bath would likely be a drawback to 4+ renters. Also, there is a lack of some helpful hints posted in the house (e.g., when to place garbage cans at the road, and instructions for operating the media devices and the washer/dryer units). Would we rent this house again? You bet!"

  • Well Appointed Vintage Beach Cottage

"A vintage beach cottage with all the amenties for a relaxing beach vacation away from the traffic and crowds of Cape Cod. The cottage has everything one could need from the kitchen/bath supplies to all the "beach toys" (beach chairs, umbrellas, beach bags). Especially important are the air conditioning units (Yes, they really are necessary on the ocean when it is hot, sticky, and foggy). Extra modern amenities include the washer/dryer (with laundry detergent, etc.) and a dishwasher! Lots of towels and blankets (even if not needed in the summer). The cottage is located on the quiet side of West Island in a year round neighborhood, only a few streets up from a sheltered beach ideal for small children (easy walking distance). The main beach is a couple of minutes by car and a short bike ride down the road. The owners are very accommadating and communication was always prompt. They are also quite conscientious about maintenance of the cottage. Excursions: Although the Cape is a short ride away, the 2 or 3 hour Cape Cod Canal boat ride from Onset (about a 35 minutes drive) is a much better excursion for getting a flavor of the Cape towns without dealing with Bridge traffic. Also, there are bike/hike/fishing roads on both sides of the Canal that are right on the Canal's edge. They are easily accessible, traffic-free, and provide great Canal recreation activites and ship/boat watching. Eating: Save money and go to Kyler's Seafood for everything from lobsters, shrimp, and fresh fish. Look for the daily truck stand across from Shaw's Supermarket at the head of Sconticut Neck Road for sweet corn and veggies. We like Shaw's Market for everything in between. Bring it back to the cottage and enjoy! The kitchen has everything including 2 lobster pots to cook enough lobsters for all of West Island!"

  • Relaxing Respite On the Water

"Lovely little cottage on the water with beautiful small garden courtyard leading to spiral staircase with second story deck overlooking the water. Nice place to kayak, fish, swim at the beach in front of the property or launch a boat from the public boat launch adjacent to the property. Outdoor shower extremely convenient. The front 3 season room is worth every minute to sit and read, enjoy a meal with family and watch the sun rise. Recommend fans to circulate air on hot, humid summer days. Couldn't find a better place to watch fireworks overlooking the bay on July 4th! Close to town and conveniences. Nicely maintained property and very friendly owner who is accessible if needed and responds promptly. Would definitely recommend to small families or a couple looking for a relaxing getaway."
