Its shallow waters, fed by the St. Clair River, provide anglers with species such as bass, catfish, perch, salmon, sturgeon and trout. On the Saginaw River sits Bay City, where there are a variety of fascinating things to do. Of particular interest is the city’s connection to the Underground Railroad used by runaway slaves. The city was founded by one of America’s renowned abolitionists, James G Birney. Here, visitors will enjoy Chillson House, a house reported to have hidden slaves, and two Civil War cemeteries at Elm Lawn and Pine Ridge, both final resting place of several well-known Civil War veterans. At the Veteran’s Memorial Park, visitors will see the sunken schooner Gerrit Smith. This 70-foot ship is rumored to have transported runaway slaves to Canada.
