"The furthest north I've ever been in Michigan is South Haven, with Kevin's family. After the annual summer reunion this year, we decided to have a real vacation for ourselves and the dogs and explore the UP--him not having been there since a small kid, and me, never at all. Staying at Greg's Keweenaw getaway was an unforgettable experience. The house itself is beautiful, clean and comfortable. It was just the two of us plus the dogs, but there was plenty of room for quite a few more; we almost wished we could transport our friends over. The kitchen was well-stocked, we never lacked for anything, and having wifi up there was a real treat, considering cell service is limited all around. Greg himself is off-site, but he was always quick to respond to any communication, and knowing his caretaker was close by was comforting, although we never had need.
The grounds are lovely. The house is in the middle of a lush field, surrounded by trees, with views for miles. It's secluded but never felt too far out or remote, with Houghton/Hancock being only 15 or so minutes away, and a quick daytrip up to Copper Harbor and the tip, but we loved the property so much that we ended up mostly staying put.
Every day, we woke with a sunrise through the master bedroom window, and ended the day watching the sunset over the hills from the deck, and then counting shooting stars at night over a glass of wine. In between, we spent our days canoeing or swimming in the pond, reading, cooking or grilling out, listening to the great soundsystem, walking the little trails around, soaking in the jacuzzi, Kevin playing basketball on the court, and me doing yoga on the deck. I can't express how alive we felt just being there. We saw deer and wild turkeys in the morning, heard coyotes in the distance at night, saw a meteor shower, and most amazingly, a small show of northern lights on our last night. All wonderful reminders of the natural world around, and such a beautiful change from our concrete city lives.
To say that it was hard to pack up the last day and head back to NYC is an understatement. We've already begun talking about incorporating a UP visit to our yearly traditions, and Greg's Keweenaw Acres home will surely be a part of that."
