"When we started to plan this year's trip to the US which had to include a visit with old friends on Douglas Lake, south of the Mackinaw bridge, we realized that this would be a chance to spend some days on the UP, an area which was totally unknown to us Swiss. Grand Marais with its proximity to the Pictured Rock National Lakeshore, and also not too far from the Seney National Wildlife Refuge, was soon the choice. Then we found the description of Plover Retreat in the internet and thought: That's it. How right we were. Rental agreement and payment from overseas functioned with the kind support by the local manager. Her directions by e-mail how to drive to the cabin helped us to find it without any problem on a sunny late afternoon and to settle there with ease.
It was the start of a marvelous week in which we enjoyed to explore the beautiful and fascinating landscape on Lake Superior by hiking, to learn about the local history and to be at leisure in this wonderful cabin. Its rustic and carefully decorated wooden interior is well arranged and equipped with everything what is needed for a real 'retreat'. It was so peaceful to sit back in one of the comfortable armchairs and to page through the botany and wildlife books from the little cupboard. Even the Webster's rendered its service when we were lost with an American term. In town, we met friendly people who gave us many interesting information about passed days and everyday life in this region.
If Plover Retreat wasn't so far away from home we would come back very soon to this neat spot. Well, who knows? A big 'thank you' to the owners for making Plover Retreat available for rent and to the local manager for her perfect administrative Service."

"We stayed for our honeymoon back in 2007. We had a great time, nice get away from the day to day of life. We had a small plunging issue but was fix right away. Was even given a free weekend stay for our troubles. We stayed again in 2008 with our boys. I loved the cabin so much. Thinking of coming back in 2016. I miss the U.P! Thanks again for the great place to get away from it all & a great honeymoon!"

"My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Grand Marais and we stayed at the Great Escape. We absolutely loved everything about it! We loved the location, the cozy atmosphere of the place, and the cleanliness of the cottage when we arrived. Sure, it was pretty chilly during the time we were there (it actually snowed our last full day there!), but we still had a great time looking for Agates on the beach and sitting by the little fireplace, sipping tea and coffee. We definitely plan on returning to the Great Escape (maybe when the weather is a little bit warmer), it is definitely a gem in the beautiful U.P.!"

"We wanted to have lots of snow to enjoy winter activities such as xc-/ and downhill skiing. And we truly experienced it. Knowing the Keweenaw area from a previous xc- ski race in March (The Great Bear Chase) we assumed that this area must receive a lot of snow in the winter. It felt nice and cozy in our cabin and we had plenty of space to play, eat and relax with our family of 5 especially when the temperatures were really low and the wind chill not so inviting to go outside. We loved the Sauna and tranquility of the area, away from the bigger towns like Calumet or Houghton. We also enjoyed the winter view of Lake Superior and the build-up ice on the shore. Our teenager is dreaming of going snowmobiling up there and starting right outside on the trails of the vacation home. That would actually be very lovely. Skiing is as excellent as it can get in the Midwest with the highest mountain Bohemia (900 ft.). They do not groom and if there is fresh powder snow like we experienced it, the downhill skiing is great for advanced and expert skiers. There are many trails throughout the area for xc- skiing (classic and skating) as well as snowshoeing. However, the best xc- skiing for us was in Swedetown/ Calumet with their great sledding hill and a 1 km "Cookie-trail" loop for our younger xc-skiers.
Thank you for the reliable and easy communication and sharing your property with us. We loved it!"
