"This house & location were everything I hoped for & more. The house is lovely & feels just like my fantasy of a summer home near the Lake. The trail through the woods to the beach is a fairyland, beautiful, quiet & unpeopled; great for biking & running. The beaches are so close & you have your choice of protected inland Duck Lake with warm water or Lake Michigan which is not so warm but absolutely lovely with a lagoon that's warm & safe for children: the best of both worlds. Cycling through the State Park on paved, deserted roads surrounded by woods was a joy. The landlords, Peter & Jan are delightful & most helpful; they feel like old friends immediately! Squeaky, the cat is glorious; he has morning coffee with you on any of the three porches & has the loudest purr of any cat I've met. All the beds are most comfortable & it's very quiet. We all loved everything about the place & I have already signed us up for next year. It was a perfect vacation! Thank you so much!"Guest: Rita Date of Stay: August 2014 Review Submitted: September 9, 2014View listing
"A week that went by entirely too fast but one that offered everything listed, and more. The owners bend over backwards to make sure everything is taken care of and that your questions are answered, so you can spend your time relaxing and enjoying everything this place has to offer. An aluminum fishing boat on a nice private dock, kayaks, a fire pit on the nice, sandy beach, and beautiful Lake Michigan sunsets are just some of the things included when you rent this cozy and comfortable cottage. Also can't say enough about the owners, they are truly wonderful people. Will definitely be back next year, already counting the days."Guest: Chuck H. "This was the first time I rented a home from someone, thus I was nervous in selecting a place. The purpose of the trip was to celebrate my 32nd birthday and my mother’s 65th birthday. There were five adults (two couples in their early 30s and my mother). I was looking for something close to town and chose the home solely on the reviews (which after my five day stay, I can say they were very truthful). The pictures on the listing are very accurate. In fact, the home is much more beautiful in person. The owners, Cory and Pat, have done a marvelous job stalking the home with all the essentials. We went to the beach every day we were there and I greatly appreciated the beach towels, beach umbrella and beach chairs the owners provided. If you are looking for something close to town, this is it! It is about a 3 minute walk. The rooftop of the Kirby house (5 minute walk) is a nice place to grab a cocktail, dinner, and watch the light show. One morning I took a run from the house to the end of the pier/lighthouse, which is about 1½ miles. We drove to the beach because we had so much to bring, but if you only need a towel, you can definitely walk (1½ miles). We took advantage of the porch and rocking chairs for morning coffee and the back patio for grilling and dinner. Pat and Cory are on top of everything that I never needed to call them before getting there or once there. In fact, they do a wonderful job of providing instructions for everything you might possibly have a question about, loved that! However, they do stress to you the freedom to call them at any time. The house was the perfect size for five adults. It was a bit warm at night on the second floor, but there are powerful fans in each of the three rooms. We did meet Pat and Cory, who are very warm people and I could quickly tell that they take pride in their home and the happiness of those that rent from them. I didn’t expect to feel like their home was my home, but I did! It’s a nice feeling to have when you’re supposed to be on vacation relaxing. Although there were no children in our group, the home is very kid friendly (i.e., games, movies, and books). I would recommend this home for anyone who is looking to be close to town and have easy access to the beach. Pat and Cory, thank you for sharing your home with us. We enjoyed our stay very much and had a wonderful time in Grand Haven. We hope to be back next year for a full week! Oh, and thank you for the fresh squeezed lemonade, it was wonderful!"Guest: Kim Date of Stay: August 2014 Review Submitted: September 12, 2014View listing
"Just back from a fabulous girls weekend. Our cottage stay was "perfect" in my sisters words and more than we could ever ask for. Arriving in 3 feet of snow, the owner greeted us with a warm smile and a freshly cleared and salted path to walk up to the cottage. When we entered the house a fire was going in the fireplace and it was so inviting. We were instantly convinced we'd have the time we were hoping for. Before the arrival and during the booking process Cory was always available to answer questions and offer advice on fun things to do in town. I never once had an issue contacting him and he was always so upbeat to talk with. I could tell he enjoyed renting this lovely property out. His service continued with excellence during our stay and he went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable, felt at home, and cared for. Some of our favorite moments included roasting marshmallows around the fire place, having a fabulous dinner at the Kirby grille room, sipping wine in the porch and relaxing the night away. Ps. He even provided slippers so that our feet wouldn't get cold due to the frigid temps outside. Who does that? :) service like that doesn't exist anymore. Overall we had the best most memorable time. Can not wait to go back!!!"Guest: La Date of Stay: March 2014 Review Submitted: March 3, 2014View listing
West Central Travel Tips
Visiting Michigan’s West Central Region
West Central Michigan covers the counties of Lake, Mecosta, Newaygo, Mason and Osceola. Its major destinations are Grand Rapids and Grand Haven vacation rentals, along with Spring Lake. To get here, visitors may find Gerald R. Ford Airport, near Grand Rapids, a convenient entry point. US Highway 31 runs along the coast of West Central Michigan, with US Highway 10 connecting the region to Interstate 75.
The weather here ranges from very warm, humid summers to very cold, snowy, winters. The weather is affected by nearby Lake Michigan, pushing the temperatures up in summer and down in winter. This area is perfect for relaxing family holidays with much to do and see, whether it is the sun and sand or the deep snow and great skiing.
Fun in the Sun and Sand or Snow
Choosing a lakeside home in West Central Michigan will be perfect for fishing. Grand Haven is known as the most chartered boat port on Lake Michigan, with varieties of salmon, trout, perch and bass. Visitors will find lots of fishing options, from the shore of the lake, on a boat or heading inland to one of the rivers around the area.
Of course, for families, West Central Michigan lodging near the lake makes a perfect environment for children. Long, hot summer days can be spent along the shoreline, enjoying the water and playing in the sand. Pick up a kite at Mackinaw Kites and Toys and the children can spend hours flying their kites along the sandy beaches.
Winters here bring the perfect conditions for sports such as cross-country skiing, with over 3,000 miles of trails to explore. There are green, blue and black diamond runs for those who love downhill skiing. If snowmobiling is your preferred activity, you will find a West Central Michigan vacation home is close to over 30,000 miles of undeveloped trails in the state and federal forests.
What Adventures Await near West Central Michigan Vacation Rentals
While the beaches are wonderful and visitors may be tempted to spend each and every day just enjoying the lake, there is a variety of other excursions and trips around the region. The Tri-Cities Historical Museum has Native American and early settler exhibits. Here, visitors can discover more about early medicine, agriculture, maritime activities, and the life of a lumberjack. Best of all, it is free! A great day for children is a day at Imagination Station with its large outdoor play area. For an activity day, head to Yogi Bears Fun Zone for miniature golf, bumper boats and miniature golf. Zoos are always popular with children and a visit to the 110-acre John Ball Zoological Garden is worth a visit to see over 1,000 different animals.
One "not to be missed" trips should be the Gerald R. Ford Museum. The children may not be enthusiastic but once they arrive, they will change their minds. Here visitors can walk through the Oval Office, attend a White House State Dinner and even see the actual burglar tools used during the Watergate scandal! It is truly a living history day.
West Central Michigan has many miles of abandoned railroad tracks which have now been made into bike trails. The rides take visitors through beautiful woodland, wetlands, across rivers and around Lake Michigan. Even non-cyclists will enjoy biking in such beautiful surroundings and it is a great activity for families.
Why Choose West Central Michigan Lake Houses?
There are many reasons why visitors choose to rent a home here rather than opting for other types of accommodation. Two of the main ones are freedom and space. These properties offer the freedom to come and go as you please and the space to relax after returning from a great day of adventures. Each home is well-equipped with everything necessary for a great home environment. Many go that little bit further and provide renters with wonderful additional luxuries, such as DVDs, games systems and BBQs. Visitors may find their vacation home is so comfortable, they will not want to leave it!
