  • Perfect lake house vacation

"We had a fantastic time at the Cozy Cottage. It was a stones throw from the lake. The accommodations were beyond our expectations. It was furnished beautifully and so well outfitted. I couldn't believe how great the kitchen was equipped. We had games of croquet in the large backyard, bbq'd on the deck and played tons of board games (many were provided). The back house was a perfect escape for the teens - with foosball, a tv and mini fridge. We stocked a ton of food and essentials, but the owners had plenty of backup coffee, cooking oil, salt/pepper, pancake mix - it was so nice. There's a great butcher (Vlasicks) in town and farmers' market - so we ate very well. Definitely try Vlasick's homemade sausages and hotdogs - incredible. We had kids as young as 7 and an adult - 79 and it worked out beautifully for all of us. The owners were quick to respond to any questions and made our stay very nice. I would definitely stay in this house again. My only regret is that we should have rented a pontoon for the week. Perhaps next time."

  • Great relaxing getaway location!

"This destination exceeded our expectations. The cottage was clean, well-stocked with the basics, and the location was unbeatable for getting away. Even with the dips in temps (low 50s during the day and 40s overnight), we had wood to make fires, and great views of Lake Huron - beautiful sunrises. We visited the town, Ocqueoc waterfalls, and Mackinaw City. We walked the beach and biked the trail. And being able to bring our senior dog was a big plus. Thank you! We are planning to return next year."

  • Wonderful!

"My family met up for a week's vacation at this home and had the best time. We are spread all over the US and we try to get together once a year to rent a house and spend a week together. This is the 7th or 8th time we have done this and everyone agreed that this was the best getaway yet. We had 7 people in our group (72, 69, 45, 44, 42, 21 and 4) and one boxer dog (3). Everyone loved this house! The things that we look for when renting a house were more than covered for the interior: the great room (kitchen, living, dining) had more than enough space for everyone to be together yet not feel crowded, the furniture throughout was comfortable and inviting, we cooked in every night and found EVERYTHING we needed in the kitchen, the bathrooms were spacious and modern, and the bedrooms were spacious with comfortable beds. We all felt that one of the best parts about the interior of the house was how much it connected you to the outside. The walls of windows and doors made you feel like you were outside all the time, which was perfect because we loved the outside. There were so many areas to explore between the screened back porch, the large deck just off the great room, the fire pit at the back of the property, the really large yard, the balcony off the master bedroom, etc., that it was easy to find your own space, which can sometimes be important during these trips. There were plenty of chairs and tables wherever you went. The 4 year old in our group loved the space to run indoors or out and to explore for bugs and stuff in the yard, but his favorite part was the train. They didn't come by often but, when they did, he would yell TRAIN! at the top of his lungs as he made a mad dash to the front porch to see it every time it went by. (FYI, I think we saw 3 trains max per day and, other than being a joy to the toddler, it did not impact our vacation one bit. We never heard the train at night.) The walk to the private beach was easy and we made the walk several times. We also spent one day up at Warren Dunes, which was about a 10 minute drive. We would recommend both highly. Marjolein and Scott were wonderful to work with. You can tell they poured a lot of themselves into the home and we really felt honored that they shared it with us. We would go back in a second and can't recommend it enough."

  • Great condo, dynamite view

"2 adults and 2 young children had a great time. Location was tremendous. As an avid boater I enjoyed watching marina activity from above. Condo was clean, well equipped and provided a wonderful "home" for our family. Proximity is great to Mackinac, Petoskey, Leland, Boyne and other choice areas. Highly recommend it."

Michigan Travel Tips

Proud Michiganders refer to their state as “The Mitten” because of its shape. Also known as The Great Lakes State, it’s no surprise that some of the best places to vacation are near Lake Michigan. Here are some of the most wonderful:

Northwest Michigan

Northwest Michigan is a great vacation spot with ample attractions for both families and couples. Check out these two wonderful towns for a relaxing getaway:

Charlevoix

Charlevoix is a beautiful lakeside town with a Cape Cod feel. Here are some of the best things to do and see here:

- Fisherman’s Island State Park has miles of trails and serene beaches.

- Castle Farms was built in 1918 and the gardens here provide a gorgeous place to simply stroll. There’s also a museum, an enchanted forest and a train for the kids to ride.

- Hit the links at Dunmaglas or Belvedere golf clubs, which have stunning lake views.

Traverse City

Traverse City is more crowded than Charlevoix because it’s very popular due to the excellent wineries, shopping and lakeside attractions. Better yet, it’s famous for its cherry production, so you’ll find a lot of treats made from the sweet fruit here. If you’re looking for excitement and relaxation, check out these hot spots:

- Get your fill of delightful locally produced wines with a tasting and tour at some excellent vineyards and wineries, including Brys Estate Vineyard & Winery, Bowers Harbor Vineyard, Shady Lane Cellars and Left Foot Charley.

- Head to the only commercial organic tea farm in North America - Light of Day Organic Farm.

- Soar above the waters of Lake Michigan with a thrilling ride from Traverse Bay Parasail or a private balloon tour from Grand Traverse Balloons.

- Sample some cherries and cherry-based treats from Cherry Republic. Bring some gifts home to family and friends!

- Catch a film or opera at the historic State Theatre, which was completely renovated and reopened by famous director Michael Moore in 2007.

- Go shopping in Sutton’s Bay, a quaint little town just a short drive north.

- Check out the National Cherry Festival during the first week of July and the Traverse City Film Festival during the first week of August.

Southwest Michigan

Southwest Michigan is a popular vacation destination for other Michiganders and locals from around the Midwest. Here are the top things to do in the most well-known destinations:

Kalamazoo

This big city in south central Michigan is the home of Western Michigan University. Here are the best things to do in Kalamazoo:

- Head to the Air Zoo for sky-high fun, where you can hop in a flight simulator, steer your very own bi-plane on a cool vintage ride, ride a 26-foot indoor Ferris wheel and even experience weightlessness.

- See fine art and history at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and the Kalamazoo Valley Museum.

- Grab breakfast or lunch at popular cafe Crow’s Nest, get dinner at quirky farm-to-table spot Food Dance and don’t miss sweet treats at Confections with Convictions and Sweetwater’s Donut Mill, which are simply divine.

Saugatuck

- Bask in the sun on the pristine sand at Oval Beach

- Catch an outdoor concert and river views at Wicks Park.

- In the summer, take a jeep tour and lay out on the untouched beaches of Saugatuck Dunes State Park, which boasts 850 acres. In the winter, go cross-country skiing on the miles of trails.

- Shop in the boutiques and grab lunch on historic Butler Street.

South Haven

- Hit the beaches and go back to nature at Van Buren State Park, the Kal Haven Trail and the historic South Haven Lighthouses.

- Go apple-picking and wine-tasting at McIntosh Orchards.

- Take a sailboat tour or lessons on beautiful Lake Michigan with Cat’s Meow Cruises or Sailing South Haven.

- Take an art class at the South Haven Center for the Arts.
