Around the lake is a trail for hikers and bikers to discover. At County Road 16, the trail links to the Paul Bunyan Trail. This trail is the longest bike trail in Minnesota, with 110 miles of mainly paved sections across a variety of terrains, from open, flat areas to beautiful hilly areas. Along the trail are lakes and swimming holes to enjoy. It is great for hikers and rollerbladers as well as biking enthusiasts. The trail links 15 towns within Minnesota, from Brainerd to Bemidji. Most of the towns have rest facilities, along with parks, shopping and attractions for visitors. During the snowy winter months, the trails are open for snowmobiling.

Lots of Great Day Trips Available near Cross Lake Cottages

Within an easy distance of Cross Lake lake houses are an excellent variety of day trips. The Brainerd International Raceway has world-class drag racing, and Wildwedge Golf and Mini Golf provides fun for all the family. The Hunts Point Sportsman’s Club offers tower shoots and pheasant hunts along with a variety of other activities. There is a theme and water park at Holiday Inn Express, with a lazy river and activity pool for children. Another great day for children is Paul Bunyan Lane at This Old Farm Pioneer Village. The park includes a 26-foot high statue of Paul Bunyan to welcome each youngster by name and children will enjoy the rides and exploring the Pioneer Village with 30 historic cabins. The village features a blacksmith shop, fire station, saloon, church, house, school and trading post in original buildings dating from the late 1800s.

With walking trails, picnic areas and a playground, the Pine Grove Zoo also is home to a wide variety of native wildlife in their natural habitat. To learn more about farming in the area, visit the Farm on St. Mathias. Here, families can enjoy the corn maze, pumpkin patch and wagon rides. Set over some 500 acres, the Northland Arboretum is a nature conserve where visitors can hike or bike through the protected area with species of the region’s flora and fauna. The facility is always grateful for volunteers so perhaps spend a day helping this non-profit organization maintain their valuable contribution. For those who enjoy hunting, Wild Acres is a 500-acre hunting farm which welcomes visitors to enjoy hunting duck, quail, pheasant and wild turkeys as well as other birds. It is set in a variety of terrains, from fields and wetlands to woodland.
