  • Retired Gals Getaway

"We are a small group of retired women who like to rent cabins or homes where we can spread out and relax while working on puzzles or craft projects. When I saw the pictures from the posting for this cabin, I knew that it would be the perfect place for us and I wasn't wrong. We absolutely loved the views from both decks and spent lots of time on them both in the morning and evening. The home was beautifully decorated and we especially liked the north woods theme. Tim and Daisy were very nice and helpful and responded quickly when we had a technical challenge with the TV. We enjoyed driving around the lake and spent some time walking through Father Hennepin State Park and shopping at the quilt store in Wahkon, but our most favorite time was spent at the cabin. The area is quiet and we saw plenty of birds while sitting on the deck. We look forward to renting this cabin again in the future."

  • Fantastic!

"I wanted you to know that my family and I had a wonderful time at your home. It was comfortable, beautiful and the view spectacular! It was everything the description said it was. We enjoyed the deck, used the BBQ, played pool and other games, watched movies and even used the fire pit one night. I could not be more pleased!"

  • Charming, clean cabin on the lake

"We rented this sparkling clean cabin for 3 nights during the week in August 2014. This cabin was the perfect relaxing, getaway. There were four adults in this cabin, which is the max I would do even though it can sleep six. There is one bathroom, a kitchen, a living room with a sofa-sleeper, one bedroom with queen bed and another bedroom with two twin beds. The cabin came with every possible amenity: two grills (one gas, the other charcoal), a fire pit with wood pre-stocked, inner tubes for swimming, fishing poles for fishing, wifi Internet access and plenty of DVDs and books for a rainy or relaxing day. The cabin was nicely decorated inside and out. The cabin is 20 feet from the shore with sliding glass doors that open onto a large deck with a nice patio table and chairs. We enjoyed sitting on the deck and watched loons and other wildlife swim by. Just steps away from the cabin is your own personal dock and boat lift. The cabin is located on the southern part of Mille Lacs Lake in a small bay. There is no beach at the cabin and the lake is rocky with some weeds, but the water is clear. We rented the owner's pontoon (nothing fancy but clean) which came with life jackets and fishing rods, and enjoyed the true-Minnesota lake experience touring Mille Lacs Lake and fishing in various spots. The cabin has a large, shaded yard. The owners live next door and popped by daily to make sure all our needs were met. We hope to return to this beautiful cabin some day soon!"

Mille Lacs Lake area is a natural wonderland conveniently located just a 90-minute drive from Minneapolis. The area offers a wealth of attractions year-round and attracts travelers with a diverse range of interests.

Mille Lacs Lake is known as a four-season destination. The summers are warm and balmy and the longer days lend themselves to endless exploring of the surrounding areas. Forest trails are open for biking and hiking and the calm lake waters provide endless hours of boating and fishing. Festivals and special events take place throughout the summer months, creating a carnival-type atmosphere in the region. In the cold winter months, good snowfalls turn the mountain trails into excellent alpine and cross country ski runs. Forest trails are perfect for snowmobiling and when the lakes freeze over, small villages of ice fishing houses pop up.

One of the lake's greatest attractions is its fishing. Famous for its walleye and bass fishing, there are several championship fishing competitions held throughout the year that attract many visitors. Even if you are not one to sit with a rod in your hand, you can still appreciate the beauty of the lake and enjoy a good book while cruising the calm waters. Kayaks and boats are available for rent and you can have great fun exploring the lakeshore on your own. Pack a picnic and find a shady spot under the trees where you can soak up nature's beauty and enjoy the sounds of the birds in the trees above.

If you climb to the top of the observation tower, you can get a spectacular view of the surrounding area. Keep an eye out for deer and beaver; they tend to be shy of humans and it's a real treat to be able to see them in the wild. There is also canoe rental available at the park.

The Mille Lacs Wildlife Management Area allows biking and hiking in the summer and fall months. The shaded trails meander through the forests and you can see a wide variety of birds if you keep a sharp lookout. Eagles, hawks and owls are commonly found in the area. Black bears also roam the hills and you need to be cautious of exploring on your own.

Golfers can enjoy a round at one of two challenging 18-hole golf courses at the Izaty Resort. This is great alternative for the days when the fish aren't biting. A pro shop and clubhouse provide for all your golfing needs. If you're staying a while at Mille Lacs Lake cottages, inquire about the family or weekly specials that the club runs from time to time.
